98 cavalier-How do you change the manaul transmission oil?

I just got this car and it has 180 thousand miles on it. They haven't changed it so i want to change it. When i got under the tranny i only found the plug to drain it out .(I know most cars have a fill up plug and a drain plug). So i went to the engine to look for dipstick and it doesn't have one. Where would the to plugs be located or how do i change the tranny oil on my manaul car. What is better gear lube or Synchromesh ? I herd synchromesh but i dont really know for this car.

Re: 98 cavalier-How do you change the manaul transmission oil?

You should only run GM Synchromesh GM PN# 12345349

driver's side wheel well there will be able to see a white lever. you will have to get under the car to see it, make sure you have enough light. once you're under there you will see the drain plug on the bottom of the trans. remove this plug to drain the fluid.then clean and replace this plug. clean off the area surrounding the white handled fill plug lever before removing the plug, which is done by lifting the white lever. pull straight up to completely remove the plug. clean the plug to make sure you don't get any road grime into your trans. make sure the car is on LEVEL GROUND to add the fluid, use only synchromesh. the best way to do this is to get yourself a new length of 3/8" fuel hose, drop it in from the top of the engine to about where the fill hole is, then get back under to make sure the hose goes in the hole. once back up top, your synchromesh should have a little pour spout top on it. cut the end of the top off, stick it in the hose, and fill away. after two quarts of synchromesh, go back under the car and check the level with the plug. if you need more, add it. if not, put the plug back and drive away.

Penzoil also has a syncromesh fluid that is the equiv. to the GM, I got it at autozone for about $6 a quart. also on my 97 z the dipstick/fill plug was red and it is a pain to see, I also had to search this site to figure out where it was!

Re: 98 cavalier-How do you change the manaul transmission oil?

I only use Amsoil i dont trust any other transmission oil. Except the GM one but i like Amsoil more. They can back up what ever they say. Dont buy the cheap stuff from autozone or autoparts. Transmission oil is very important so i would rather splerg a little money. Thanks man for telling me. Ill get back to you to see if i found it.
