Crankshaft position sensor

The "service enginine soon" light came on in my 2000 DeVille DTS. The error code was caused by one of the crankshaft position sensor. The 4.6L has two crankshaft position sensors, both above the oil filter. The error code did not mention whether it was sensor "A" or "B". At $40 per sensor, I may just pull both of them and replace each. But I've heard this is a common problem with GM's. However, I did not see any past threads that mention this problem. Anyone else have this problem? If so, which sensor?

Re: Crankshaft position sensor

The error code is P0385 - Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor circuit.

Re: Crankshaft position sensor

This the the 24x signal cps. Unfortunately I do not know specifically which one is the correct sensor.

Re: Crankshaft position sensor

I pulled both sensors but couldn't see any physical damage to either so I replaced them both. For anyone doing this job in the future, I recommend removing the oil filter housing bracket so you have good access to the sensors. There are two bolts that hold the bracket. After removing the two bolts and the electrical connector, I removed the oil filter and bracket as one piece.

The malfuntion in the crankshaft position sensor has been causing my vehicle to stall. If your 4.6L Cadi is stalling, the problem may be the crankshaft position sensor. It did not stall often but it stalled about 8 times before an error code was generated.
