Fuel Pump Problems

My passport 2001 gas gauge has been broke, when I took the passport to get checked, the computer said it was my fuel pump. That why my gas gauge was broke. My passport keep running for a long while, but stop running today. Does anyone think its still my fuel pump? My fuel filter is less than 2 years old.

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

Could be the pump, especially if you let it get below 1/4 tank often (hard to tell without a working fuel gauge). These pumps need to sit in fuel to cool them or they will over heat and burn out.

Only real way to tell if its the pump is to swap the relay for a known good one to eliminate that as a possible problem, replace the filter, then test the pressure on the fuel rail. I dont remember exact numbers but should be somewhere above 44 psi.

Re: Fuel Pump Problems

Had same problem with mine. Just recently replaced the fuel pump.

However, I replaced it with a "new-style" Delphi that does not come with a strainer sock on the bottom, like the old one did.

I was hoping to be able to transfer the old sock to the new pump. No way.

I'm wondering if I'll be sorry I didn't pay the extra $100 bucks for one of the old styles that had a sock on the bottom? Anyone have experience with this that can advise?

Also, the old pump had little black pegs that held the pump off the bottom of the tank. The new Delphi pump did not have those pegs, so the new pump is pushed right against the bottom of the tank by the spring pressure of the pump arms. That doesn't sound good.

Have I messed up? Any opinions amongst those that have been there - done that?
