Rear speakers cut in and out

Hi,

I have a 2000 GP/GT without the Bose system. Just the factory "higher" end system with onboard EQ, and the 6 speakers. 2 window pillar tweeters, 2 6" front door speakers, and the rear (6x9's???).

The rear speakers will arbitrarily cut out upon starting the vehicle. Meaning, I may go out right now, and the speakers work. Stop the car for a period of time, re-start the car and they're live. No rhyme or reason whatsoever.

I removed the deck a couple of weeks ago, and took it to a local A/V repair shop. They do quality work, as I've done business with them before. The technician said he had the deck on the bench for 4 hours, and found nothing wrong with it. He checked all IC's, boards, switches, etc.

I've racked my brain trying to diagnose this problem. I have installed countless car sudio systems in the past and I have never seen anything like this.

Suggestions?

Thanks.

Re: Rear speakers cut in and out

there is an amp located underneath the rear seats. that may be your problem...

you need to remove the rear seat...and you should see it sitting on the floor. i would remove that and have it tested

Your rear speakers are bad. My car did the exact same thing and replacing the speakers fixed the problem.

+1

My voice coils were fried and it did the same thing. Some newType S Alpine 6x9's fixed that right up.

Re: Rear speakers cut in and out

Even 20 years ago, GM was using Delco speakers made in Singapore. The OEM speakers aren't much to write home about.

Even better speakers like Pioneers suffer long-term. My 6x9 Pioneers from the mid 80s fell completely apart just from sitting in my toolbox.

Re: Rear speakers cut in and out

Funny everyone hates stock so much. I like the sound form my delco's. Plus i'm sure the factory cd player wouldnt be able to supply aftermarket speakers with adequate wattage. If you have an aftermarket deck, then fine, stick in a set of aftermarket speakers, but if your using the stock cd player, it wont have enough watts to power anything but factory speakers.

actually, believe it or not...the Grand Prix's have an awesome factory amp. when i brought my car into the shop one day, the guy said that the Prix's have one of the best factory amp's he's ever seen

one time i was riding in my buddy's '01 GT and we were listening to music. it sounded really nice, so i asked him what kind of subs he had, he laughed and said...thats just Alpine 6x9's. i didnt believe him so i had him pop the trunk and there was nothing in it. and he still had the factory AC Delco CD player.

Re: Rear speakers cut in and out

I agree with tblake. I had original AC Delco's in my 1998 Grand Prix and they sounded awesome! Then the back speakers stopped working after many years and I replaced them with Polk Audio speakers and they never sounded as good as the old Delco's. Hey, was there really an amp under the seat? The new Polk Audio's never kicked out enough sound back there. But now that car is totaled, so I guess it doesn't matter anymore

Re: Rear speakers cut in and out

Yeah, aftermarkets sound good when pared with an amp. I dont even think a lot of aftermarket decks have enough power for aftermarked speakers.

Best if its not broken to not fix it.
