98 Grand Caravan RPM issues

I have a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan with 188,000 miles on it. The RPM's drop suddenly when driving on the interstate and letting off the gas while cruising at around 65-70mph. It seems like everytime I let off the gas the van is going to die. What is causing this fluctuation in RPM's?

Thanks for your help with this issue.

Tony

Re: 98 Grand Caravan RPM issues

Several things pop up but first comes the idle air control motor/valve. When you take your foot off the pedal the throttle plate closes. No air gets past it to the intake manifold. The IAC valve is supposed to open letting air into the intake manifold so the engine can idle. Could be the valve needs cleaning or replacement or the powertrain control module (PCM) isn't giving the valve a command to open. Could also be a faulty throttle position sensor. Both sensors can be tested before removal. I would head to Autozone and have them connect a scanner to check for error codes. It's free.
