US Supreme Court Shoots Down D.C. Gun Ban

Well, this should make the pro Second Amendment and gun lobby people in the country happy.

Quote:

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the District of Columbia cannot ban a citizen from keeping a handgun at home, throwing out one of the nation's strictest gun control laws.

The Supreme Court has overturned Washington, D.C.'s strict gun ban.

Writing for the 5-4 majority, Justice Antonin Scalia said that the Constitution protects an individual's right to keep and carry a gun. The decision will affect gun control laws across the country.

"We hold that the District's ban on handgun possession in the home violated the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense."

Now, if we could only get them to get rid of all the other laws that violate the constitution.

Oh yeah! We're happy alright!

The scary thing though is that there were four liberal assholes who voted against it.

Man, I almost fell out of my chair on this one. Flip flop Obama?

Now that he has all the sheep on the left fooled he's moving in on the the ones in the middle (moderates) and possibly the right.

Quote:

Barack Obama intensified his campaign to appeal to voters on the life-and-death issues of the American heartland yesterday by stepping away from his past support for gun control.

In the latest in a series of policy reversals for the Democratic presidential candidate, Obama came out in support of yesterday's supreme court decision overturning a gun ban in the city of Washington that had been a model for fighting urban crime.

He had previously supported the Washington ban, the strictest in the US.

It was the second time in 24 hours that Obama had shifted towards a more conservative position. On Wednesday, he took issue with the supreme court for striking down the death penalty for cases of child rape that do not involve murder.

.................................................. .................................................. ..

"He ran to the left to get nominated, and he is running back to the centre in the general election," said Larry Sabato, a politics expert at the University of Virginia. "You can call it flipflopping, or you can call it readjusting, or you can call it determined to win."

It's all about the vote, man. Whatever sounds good to the most people is the way to sell it. No way in hell that he'll tell us what he really thinks.

We get to find that out after he's elected.

Yeah, I like guns too, but it is undeniable that the US has has a gun violence problem (especially handguns) that other developed nations do not have.....
Canada, for example, has millions of long guns, but very few hand guns, due to 70 years of strict handgun control. Our level of gun crime per capita is a fraction of that of the US.

Personally, I thought the handgun bans were a real step in the right direction to correct these problems.

I prefer to live in a society where nobody has a gun (or at least a handgun) so I do not need one. However, if I lived in the US, where millions of people have one, I would get one too, much to my regret.

Yup it must be scary in a society where everybody has a gun...illegally.

But hey, keep those "safe" handgun bans flying and living in your happy place of puppy dogs and rainbows away from those evil boom boom sticks.

Re: US Supreme Court Shoots Down D.C. Gun Ban

I read an article about flaws in Canada's gun control laws and it contained typical statistics. Although some may agree the basic intent was good the injury or death rate by other weapons such as knives and clubs is greater than that of guns. So go figure.

To see how well a total gun ban works just look South to our neighbor Mexico. Total mess down there.

Bans don't work, period, ever.

Sure, gun violence drops (after a huge, deadly surge), but violent crime itself often increases, as predators are emboldened by an unarmed, helpless public.
