Tamiya 956 - Rothmans

This is another project I'm working on, after screwing up the Revell 962 and binning it I'm having a little more success doing the Tamiya 956 kit, much nicer this one, plus has some lovely engine detail to show off.

This is the Canon boxing, but with the help of some Studio 27 decals the bodyshell now looks like this

I'll also be posing this figure next to this car in the appropriate Rothmans attire

Nice start. It's a very beautiful livery the 'Rothmans' in my opinion and it really suits this car perfectly.Who makes the figure? It looks very nicely cast.

Re: Tamiya 956 - Rothmans

Thanks Steve, the figure is by MSM creations, I've done some initial paintwork on the upper half, helmet and white areas mostly done, waiting for some vallejo blue to arrive for the rest of the overalls. Visor still to be done.

Great start. It sounds like this kit is much more detailed and a better quality than Tamiya's own 962 - is that correct?

hi Potsie, the Tamiya 962 suffers from having a bodyshell which is moulded in one piece with the glass, making painting and demarcation between bodywork and glass difficult, (the bodyshell was originally designed for the miniature R/C car) and overly shallow air inlets either side of the cockpit.

The 962 is also a curbside kit and lacks engine detail, so yes it would be fair to say the 956 is a much better quality kit.

cheers

john

Re: Tamiya 956 - Rothmans

Did some more work on the figure, painted with the excellent Vallejo Game colours the end finish is very glossy but toned down nicely with some matt coat.

I'll add some logo decals when I figure out where to find a small enough Union Jack decal for the front of his helmet and Shell logos for his shoulders !

Here is a quick shot of the bodyshell, clear coat on and most of the decals sealed - again I'm missing decals for the 1984 car driven by Bell and Ickx so thats something to add in the future.
