Lucas Transmission Slip and other solutions
i have a 97 grandam GT coupe 3.1 6cyl. 108 k
i just started to notice that the transmission is slipping around 30. if you go from 0 mph and are traveling pass 30 it would slip, but if you travel like in the city and your maybe at like 29mph and just hit 30 then there is a slight delay. the engine rpm with go up but the car will stay on 30mph for maybe 2-3 seconds. I just got it, so i might just sell it and not worry about it. but.. people want me to at least check in to it see if the problem can be solved. Some said a transmission flush--- its a high mileage, i dont want to cause any more damage to the trans..so no Fluid drain and put new fluid in..- both of these i dont think are necessary because my fluid is pink. and wouldnt that be sort of like flushing? and maybe a chance to mess up my high mileage transmission? I assume no leaks because fluid says full, but thats after it sitting over night and me riding around the block and then checking it on a summer day.. should i run a little longer? or is my reading is about as accurate as it can get. Lucas? Anyone with a GRAND AM ever tried it? successful? no? if so, how long? as for solenoids and valves and all that how much could that cost to replace? an estimate? i know every car is different but what about an estimate? How long can a slipping transmission last under it doesnt go in to the next gear at all? anyone? some please respond, unfortunatley i need this car to be dependable. Re: Lucas Transmission Slip and other solutions
Welcome to AF.
Please remove the link to the howard forums, its not necessary and is not allowed. On the trans its hard to say with out getting it scanned. Could be a TCC solenoid, could be a shift solenoid or some sensor, and could be ready to crap out. ![]() As far as Lucas never tried thier trans products.

Re: Lucas Transmission Slip and other solutions
Ok its removed.
![]() It shouldnt cost to much to get it scanned by a trans shop. Most would do it free just for a chance to work on your automobile. And luckily a lot of the things I mentioned can be replaced/repaired with out removing the transmission which will save you tons of ca$h. Hope that helps

Re: Lucas Transmission Slip and other solutions
i hope so.. but whats the difference of having a tranmission that needs to be replaced and having a transmission that might be able to fix one part?.. we more than one thing is wrong. and one last question, are leaks repairable in the trans?

Re: Lucas Transmission Slip and other solutions
It probably doesn't need to be replaced.. just rebuilt, unless the case is cracked or otherwise damaged. If there is one solenoid that is bad, then it can most likely be replaced and nothing else will need to be done, unless it has slipped so much that you need new clutches and bands.
A leak is always repairable... but there is a huge price difference between the pan gasket and the pump seal. I would not put anything in a transmission other than transmission fluid, unless a trans shop tells you it needs to be rebuilt, it which case dump a bottle in and tell us if it works. Another possibility, since you said the fluid is pink, is that the previous owner had the fluid changed and didn't flush it. Adding new fluid without flushing it can cause deposits to dislodge (trans fluid is a great cleaner), if they get stuck in a solenoid it can cause slipping. If it were my car, I would have it flushed by a shop that uses BG's flush machine. I'm sure there are many other good flush machines out there, but I can personally say we've never had a problem with hundreds of flushes using their system and chemicals. There's no guarantee it will fix anything, but we've had good luck flushing transmissions that were beginning to slip, I'd say 3/4 of the ones that slip before the flush don't slip after the flush. 108,000 miles isn't really high mileage, we flushed the trans in our shop truck when we got the machine, it had something like 160,000 miles on it at the time (the fluid was very dark), and still shifts great 3 years later.
