should calipers slide on a 97 3500
Ok stupid question,I just replaced the brakes on my 97 chevy 3500 hd and the calipers look newish but I had to press the sleves back in with a press on the calipers.I mean the ones that the two mounting bolts go through.I know on most cars the caliper is made to slide back and forth on them,is this truck ment to as well or are they somewhat fixed? Thanks

Re: should calipers slide on a 97 3500
They should slide back and forth fairly easily. Sounds like they need to be cleaned.

pins, guide hole and rubber boots should be cleaned and in good condition....coat pins with grease and with piston fully pushed back cal. should slide easy... use small wire pipe brush and a file if necessary to get surface smooth or buy new hardware.. |

Re: should calipers slide on a 97 3500
on every car with disk brake caliper moves on caliper bracket. that's the basis of its operation - squeeze/release disk. same goes for brake pads - they should slide on the bracket. normal course of action is to lubricate, with caliper/brake grease, caliper pins/bolts, and brake pads attachment areas. i, also, lubricate the back of the pad where it contacts caliper.
to press piston back into caliper body, place old pad against piston, clamp large c-clamp on top of the brake pad and around the caliper, and squeeze piston it. keep master cylinder canister open to avoid back pressure. coat hanger comes handy to suspend caliper to the spring/strut, while doing what you doing. |

when I change the engine oil one thing with this vehicle i do is grab each caliper and see if it will rock....if not this means the caliper pins need attention...this apears to be because of the inferior crap metal GM uses in this part...never had to do this until i got this vehicle... If the caliper slides easy you should notice that the ABS will work more effectively......you may see mpg increase... |
