2001 GTP No O.D., no 3rd and slipping in 2nd

Yesterday, I was in a parking lot and put the car in reverse and backed out of a parking spot. I shifted the car in drive but the car would not move forward (just as if it was in neutral) I shifted the car into 3rd and again nothing. I shifted the car into 2nd and car moved forward but their was a noticeable shutter or type of slipping. Once i was on the road I moved the shifter to "Drive" and the car seemed to be okay until I came to a stop again and then i had to repeat everything all over. The car has 100,000 miles and I have never had any type of tranny problems. This just happend out-of-the -blue.
Any input would be greatly appreciated....

Re: 2001 GTP No O.D., no 3rd and slipping in 2nd

Sounds like the same issue I had..Mine happened out of the blue also. On mine I had no Drive and no 3rd, but in 2nd and 1st it would catch but it shuttered a bit. My problem turned out to be a "sprag" gear or something and cost me $1200 to fix it. I hope your problem is something simple but sounds kinda the same. Good luck! ~Joe

Transmission with NO Over drive or NO 3rd gear until on highway...repair???

I have a 2000 GTP. When putting the car into drive or 3rd the car acts as if it is in Neutral. I put it into second and it drives except a little bit of a shutter. As you drive down the road and shift into Over drive it drives fine...Then when you come to a stop you have to start off in 2nd again. I recently visited a tranny shop and he said probably Overdrive clutch is gone or until they tear it apart they don't know. I asked re: rebuild and shop said it would cost $2000-2200. Is this for real??? for a rebuild. I have read how it could be a shaft, Modulator, vacuum line, or other things. How can I be sure its not something simple? Can a gm dealer or tranny shop put it on a scanner at all to find the problem instead of tearing the tranny apart?
Any experieces or advice would be greatly appreciated...Thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply. I was told by tranny shop it could be a O.D. clutch or whatever. They don't really know off hand they say...Researching right now...Thanks for your reply....

I merged your two threads, as there is no reason to have separate redundant threads on the same issue.

Re: 2001 GTP No O.D., no 3rd and slipping in 2nd

I would call around where you live man...even if I had needed a total rebuild of my tranny 90% of the places were tops $1800. 2200 seems a bit high, Thing is with most tranny problems even if its simple, they need to rip it open anyway and usually will charge you for close to a total rebuild. Like with mine i had done 2 weeks ago and it was a "sprag" gear and the part was only $124 or something, but after tearing it apart it was like $1200 with a year warrenty. I hope with yours its something cheaper it really sucked to shell out $1200. I had to take a loan out of my 401k to get it fixed. good luck bro!!

Check out zzperformance for a rebuild, I thought I read somewhere that they offer free installation when you buy their rebuilds.

Or else put a used one in. Ed Morad from ebay should be able to help you out. Good Luck!

Re: 2001 GTP No O.D., no 3rd and slipping in 2nd

Thanks for the replies guys...I thought $2000 for a rebuild was a little bit much! I worry that even if it is something simple ex: $100.00 part that they would still say I needed to rebuild it... as how would i know otherwise?
Does anyone know whether a shop can use a scanner to determine the tranny problem???(before pulling everything apart)
thanks for the input-steve

Re: 2001 GTP No O.D., no 3rd and slipping in 2nd

When was the last tranny service - ATF and screen filter? Drop the pan and see what is in there would be a start.

Some tranny DTCS do not trigger the SES/CEL light so a scan with a trans capable scan tool may reveal something. Doesn't hurt to do the above before spending the big bucks.

Re: 2001 GTP No O.D., no 3rd and slipping in 2nd

The last tranny service was done roughly 30,000 miles ago. I am not able to drop the pan myself.....I wasn't sure if a "code" would be present. The tranny seems to be slipping now even in 1st and second....

If you're not DIY capable or lack the proper diagnostic tools then you'll probably have to bite the bullet and take it to either a GM dealership or transmission shop. Good luck!
