97 PA Ultra problems!
Hello all. Looking for a bit of advise. 97 PA Ultra 3.8SC 141K...starting to have a few issues. The Trans - intermitent shift problems...slams into gear(seems like 1-2 shift and overdrive)...long shift...seaching for gears on uphill climb while cruise is set. Codes:P0705-trans range and P1811-max adapt and long shift. Anyone run into this, had these codes, etc? The Engine - Loss of power in general...stumbles...no power while taking off while turning...hiccup can be felt while sitting and idling in park and gear. No codes! Again...anyone run into this. Any help appreciated. MM

Click Here for some good thread info on P1811. We have many more threads in the PA, LeSabre, & Regal forums, just do a search for P1811 or PO705 in those forums.
As far as the engine stumbles and loss of power, we need to ask you a few questions. When was the last time you had the plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter changed? Have you had the fuel pressure tested?

Re: 97 PA Ultra problems!
Plugs and wires about 45k ago...same with the fuel filter(I guess it's due!)...and air filter last summer/fall. Used all AC Delco parts for the plugs and wires, plus no misfires, so I can't yet justify a change. The fuel filter might be a culprit, but I would expect the problem to be a bit more constant...and in my years I've never seen a filter get so bad in 40-45k that it caused problems..but there is a first time for everything. Re: 97 PA Ultra problems!
Have you tested fuel pressure? Has the crank sensor (CKPS) ever been replaced?

Re: 97 PA Ultra problems!
Some more questions.
When was the last tranny service - ATF and screen filter? The P0705 DTC is of concern. It indicates the PCM module is not seeing one or more inputs from the transmission range switch (PRND321). It tells the PCM which gear the car is in. Also, known as the park/neutral switch used for BTSI operation and used for the gear indication at the instrument panel (IP).

Re: 97 PA Ultra problems!
Last trans service(flush) at 96K when I bought the vehicle...don't want to tempt the fates too much right now with a flush. The fluid is a bit dirty, but not too bad. I purchased a Trans Range sensor last Friday, but I got rained out over the weekend on the install, so it's on hold right now. I haven't had any problems in the last couple of days, but I haven't driven too much. I don't have any illusions that it will fix all/any of the problems, but it was only 40 bucks and I figure I'll be able to eliminate one more possibility, but we'll have to see. I'll get back to you once I get the TR sensor installed and get a couple of miles on her. Thanks...in the meantime. MM.

Re: 97 PA Ultra problems!
Flush?...maybe ouch! Was the flush a full power flush or just a fluid exchange service? Not uncommon to see problems show up several thousand miles later down the road when flushed especially when the autotransaxle has high mileage. We recommend a pan drop only and replacing the ATF drained out and the screen filter. When it was flushed was a new screen filter installed? Also, with a pan drop you can see what may be sitting in the pan which may be an indicator.

Re: 97 PA Ultra problems!
I know about the power flush thing...a good friend/former co-worker performed it at a shop that I used to work at and it's just a fluid exchange, no additional pressure. I may drop the pan in the near future once I get the TR sensor on and put a couple miles on it. HotZ28: to answer your questions...no, I haven't changed the crank sensor, and I haven't tested the fuel pressure...yet. I'm trying to nail down the trans issues first if I can, but I know that they can certainly be related as well. Thanks for all the suggestions. I will give you an update once I get the range sensor on it. MM
