4 cyl fuel mileage.

Picked up a 99 Metro 4dr.,auto,80K, orig owner,really nice shape!,very well serviced.

The first real mileage test. Not deadly accurate..but came in very close to 400 kilometres(248 miles) for $30.. at $1.34 Cdn./litre. 340 of it was highway at 100k/hr (62mph) the rest city

In NORMAL wording/not metric.. looks like 45mpg to me.

Re: 4 cyl fuel mileage.

I don't want to spoil your party but you need to recalculate your MPG.
New the Geo/Chevy Metro 4cyl got 30/36mph city and 34/42 highway, this is the mpg for manual/automatic , as you can see because of the automatic and crappy 3s gets the worst mileage.
You will get 45mpg with a 3cylinder but for sure not with a 4cyl .
My Chevy gets between 34 and 36 oj the highway.

There are actually some big..and growing internet sites that compare previous epa, mfr. and real world fuel economy.
I have tinkerred around with many, many cars extensivelly mpg wise!
I bought a Spacekom mpg computer in the early 1980's that could be fitted to various vehicles. Had an actual flowsensor in it.
We just got rid of our 3 cyl Firefly.
One of our Escorts (93 SW) used to get consistentlly 5.5 Cdn gallons..25L for a round trip to our cottage 120 miles away..driving at about 90km/hr or so.. I did that about a million times for $25 at $1 per litre. That was about 43 or so Cdn per gallon. When I took that same car skiing..about 340km winter, bad roads, weather the mileage was similar..around 20 to 22 L per trip. We replaced the 93 with a 97 and the mileage is not quite as good..(about 23/24 L per trip although it has a lot more power and I tend to drive it 110 km/hr or so.) For some reason Escort wagons in particular seem to be very, very good on gas.
To be honest I never did check the mileage on our 3 cyl Firefly. All I know is that it was much, much better than our Escort at about 43 or so. I am guessing the 3cyl Firefly was 55..maybe 60 Cdn per gallon. I overfilled our 3cyl Firefly too many times..sloshing gas on the ground.. because I knew the gauge had to be wrong or something..tank not full/air lock..knowing it had to burn more gas than that.
Previouslly we had 5 Chevettes..they all got about 37 Cdn /gallon. Didn't seem to matter if it was city/hwy or how they were driven.
We were actually stunned that the Escort wagons were so much better than Chevettes. I dunno..different emmissions..Can./U.S? I dunno.

I'll check this Metro again a few times..and the odometer..and where I fill it up and report back. Even rough guess's with the gas gauge/mileage before and what I was putting in put it at over 40mpg.. and better than our Escorts.

My 1998 Metro 5 speed 3 cylinder gets 56 MPG and I can even do better if I wanted too.

Re: 4 cyl fuel mileage.

Arnie- our '96 1.3l, std., four door was getting 49mpg (converted from L/100km) just before it went into a coma. Our '89 1.0l, std., 3 cyl. Sprint just topped a converted 50mpg. Forget about winter, but you already know that. Both got around 35mpg from November to March.

Did you use 4.56l/gal when converting? Unless my math sucks (it's late for me) they say we should be getting somewhere around 68mpg! Read the mileage tips thread. They are claiming 55mpg (US gals I'm assuming).

In a standard Metro with an automatic, without doing a thing?

I'm having trouble believing that. Like Spy says, the EPA numbers for a stock 1.3 Metro with a slushbox hovered around 30/33 C/H, which is exactly what mine got before I started messing with it.

Re: 4 cyl fuel mileage.

Not speaking for or against but 45mpg converted to your smaller gallon is equal to 36mpg. Not that far off the EPA (?) mark.
