94 XFi engine swap into 93 nonXFi-No Spark

My 94 XFi has lost its legs, they have rusted out. I bought a 93 base model (I believe) with a bad engine. I have swapped out the engine and put the 94 XFi engine in. I plugged everything in and checked all of the fuses in the fuse block and the fuse box under the hood. Everything looks fine. The timing belt is fine and the rotor spins when I crank it over. I get no spark to the coil. I tried both coils from both cars. It turns over just fine, but no spark!

Do you have any ideas? ECM? different wiring harness connections?
What could I be overlooking?

Re: 94 XFi engine swap into 93 nonXFi-No Spark

When I did my engine swap earlier this year I had a similar problem then I realized the two brass or copper grounding rings were not properly grounded to the intake manifold. After I grounded them it started right up. Good Luck.
Regards,
Jack

Re: 94 XFi engine swap into 93 nonXFi-No Spark

1st, there's not much difference (If any) between the 93 and 94 Model engines and setup. My car has a Non XFI 94 Engine in a 94 XFI Vehicle....No problems! Take a look at the diagram below towards the top. Unplug the 2 wire electrical plug from the coil (Black W/White Stripe and Brown W/White Stripe wires), get a 12 V Test light and ground it good..... put the key in and turn the igntion switch on the the "Run position" without attempting to start the car. Now check for 12V At the "Black with a White Stripe" wire of the connector for the coil you disconnected......It should show 12V and light up? If not, 1st make sure the 20 Amp "Ignition" Fuse is good under the dash in the fuse box? If so, swap out the "Fuel Injection" relay in the "under the hood" fuse/relay box with one of the other relays or a spare from the old car in it and reconnect the 2 wire coil connector, then try and start the car......Post back what you come up with?

Re: 94 XFi engine swap into 93 nonXFi-No Spark

Thanks guys for the suggestions!

I know I had connected up the ground on the manifold, but I took it off and cleaned both the manifold and the ring and reinstalled it and "shazam" it started. Just when you think you know everything....

Thanks,
Kurt
