|
Braking problem, why is the steering wheel shacking?
When bracking hard at higher speed, normally > 50 my steering wheel starts shacking. Is this normal? How could I fix it?
I'm driving a 94 Integra LS. Thanks in advance

Take your pick of possible issues. Unevenly-worn tires, out of balance radial belts in tires, warped rotors, uneven brake pressure, and even bad alignment can all cause the steering wheel to shake in hard braking.
I'd start by inspecting the tires and possibly rotating them. Rotating is good.  Have your rotors checked for warping or bad wear. If they're warped or worn down, REPLACE THEM! A minor flaw in a rotor can yield major problems in braking. Then I'd check all your brake pads (heck, might as well replace 'em while you're there). Check to see if the outside pad is wearing a lot more than the inside pad. If you haven't flushed the brake fluid in the last say, 2 years, you might as well do that too. It's always a good idea to do it, and it doesn't cost much to either do yourself or get done. I think most shops charge like $50 for the job.

I have the same problem!!!!!...but i know exactly what it is.....it's my right reat brake rotor...a small part if it sticks...it's not even with the rest of the rotor and vibrates just enough at about 55mph to make the whole car (and steering wheel) vibrate.....id say jack up the car and spin the wheels and feel for any resistance...that's how i found out my right rear was messed up...good luck

the vibrating while braking is almost always because of warped rotors. a simple machining and possibly replacing the pads should do the trick

rotors
I would say they are your rotors.. do u feel a pull to either right or left when u step on the brakes ?? If you do, then the rotors are probaly bent.. get in machined.. its very dangerous driving around like that especially in the wet coz u lose control easily.

if it pulls its the front rotors or pads...unless the rears are severe...n e way rotors are annoying..i need new ones...:frog:

Hello,
Sorry for the delay, no there is no pull, but there is a wild shaking if I accelerate up to 80, no problem if I stick around 65(but that's impossible if you know what I mean and then when bracking at the above speed (80) it shakes like crazy. Yes, I will change the rotors, and the brake pads also probably next week...coz I can't go 100 safely anymore... And here is a question, since I'm going to get 16's pretty soon, should I upgrade the rotors(larger diameter), any pros and cons on the matter? If so, where can I get good ones at a decent price??
