4x4 grates

i have a 96 c/k2500 ext cab long base....when i engage the 4lo it makes a grating sound.need some help !!!!!!!!!!! please

What area is the grating noise coming from?
Does the front drive shaft lock in?
Does the right front axle lock in?
Any 4W lights blinking?
