please help me on fiquiring out this obd 2 scanner

i just bought an obd 2 scanner for my 96 ford windstar minivan and its not pulling up any codes. but the car isnt starting. does it have to be started? how do i get the codes? pleaseeeeeeeeee help.

if your car has been sitting for 2 yrs, there won't be any codes stored in the van's computer. it needs to run and let the computer get some data b/4 it gives any codes.

Also, my code reader will read "connecting" until I turn the key to the ON position.
No need to start the vehicle....just turn the key to "ON".

i did turn key to on position. we changed the coil pack, the ignition module, put new spark plugs in it. it will crank over but wont start. its 3.8 motor.i dont know what else to do to get it started to do a good code check. i need help. any info is very helpful. thank u

Well you need to make sure its getting spark to the plugs and fuel.. A quick check to the fuel rail to make sure fuels getting there..You can use a fuel pressure gauge. Or at least check the fuses to see that they are all good .But I would make sure its getting spark and fuel first.. Then you may have to start looking at the fuel pump..

i got it to run but now it runs rough

well good news we got it started. when the servintine belt broke it took out the crank sensor. so had to rewire it and didnt have to by anew 1 thank god. it started but now it misses and and runs real rough. it even stalls going dow the road.
