1994 chev silverado 1500 pickup

just bought my son his first pickup, he is crazy happy. the truck has 143000 miles on it. the truck is in good shape, we changed the oil and oil filter air breather and pvc valve. then i checked the tranny fluid, its brown and smells almost burnt.would it be best to do a complete tranny flush or just the pan and filter change. the tranny shifts fine and has no problems. thanks all for your help.

Also the a/c compressor is seized, beside the junk yard were can i get a good rebuilt one.

and what oil type is in the compressor?

I'd just replace the filter and install fresh transmission fluid. Have you looked at any of your local auto parts stores fro a reman. a/c compressor? www.rockauto.com, a place where I get a lot of my parts online has compressors for this truck around $182 for a Four Seasons brand.

Re: 1994 chev silverado 1500 pickup

compressor has pag150 if it is a R134A system, if it is an R12 system it will have esther100.

You can get a reman compressor for pretty good change, you will need to flush the entire system before installing new or used compressor. I use 3 cans of brakleen (the green cans non chlorinated) and force compressed air through a hose and watch out on the other side! It will puke grease and metal shavings but you have to get all that out.

Then install new compressor with new dryer, new seals. Then pull a vacuum for about an hour, wacth for leaks with gauges, suck in a can of new 134a and top off (I think that truck uses 2.5 cans) and vwoala!! ICE

I believe it should be R134A as the changeover from R12 to R134A was in 1993. My '94 C1500 uses R134Am and all the vehicles I've seen in the shop post '93 use R134A. IF the system does use R12, maybe now would be a good time to convert to R134A as future maintenance should be a lot cheaper with the ever declining supply of R12 available in the future. There are kits available to do the job, and I've seen a lot of people who have already converted their vehicles successfully from the old refrigerant to the new.

Re: 1994 chev silverado 1500 pickup

Since you say the tranny shifts fine and has no troubles I'd err on the side of safety and just replace the fluid and filter. You run the risk of something possibly becoming dislodged during the flush and causing issues later on. Since you have no issues now, why risk the chance of something happening by power flushing it? I don't have the capacity for the transmission at the moment, but I do have it in my factory service manual (which I don't have access to at the moment.) If nobody else posts the capacities in the meantime, I can post them later when I get my manual.

Should be 4 - 5 qts for just dropping the pan and filter.

I would add a drain plug to make things easier in the future. Then after you change the filter, drive it for a week and drain it again (using the new drain plug) and refill with fresh fluid.

Re: 1994 chev silverado 1500 pickup

Actually you will need to verify the refrigerant type before you add any freon. R134A is explosive with R12. I h ave seen 1995 model vehicles with R12. I have beena licensed AC tech for over 10 years.

From EPA.gov: (Clean Air Act)

"Up until 1995, R-12 was used in virtually all automotive A/C systems. But R-12 was phased out of production in the U.S. and many other industrialized nations because it is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), a manmade chemical that contains chlorine. R-12 and other CFCs were banned under the revisions to the Clean Air Act because scientists discovered that the chlorine from CFCs was destroying the Earths ozone layer. This region of the upper atmosphere shields us against harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. R-12 was replaced with R-134a, an ozone-friendly gas that does not contain chlorine."

There should be a sticker on the compressor, or in the engine compartment notifying you of what refrigerant is in your a/c system.
