2002 taurus sedan SE hitch question

ahoy....ok, so i want to throw a hitch on my taurus...but i'll be damned if i'm gonna pay 250-300 bones for a hitch brand new...can anyone tell me the specs that a 2nd hand hitch needs to have? ie, distance between bolts, etc... i really don't know what i need to know for buying this hitch.

Re: 2002 taurus sedan SE hitch question

Are you looking at a specific brand of hitch? The decent hitches are ordered by application, so getting a used hitch of the proper model number is all you should need to know. What are you planning to tow/haul? How much is the cargo worth compared with the cost of the correct hitch?

You can check the major hitch manufacturer's sites to see if they give dimension details such as you request. Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch are a couple that come to mind.

Re: 2002 taurus sedan SE hitch question

well i'm not looking to tow anything specific, it'd be nice to be able to haul a trailer full of soil from time to time, and i'm planning on tearing up my yard to make a veggie garden, so i need some way of removing dirt and rocks.

and one day i'll convince the wife to let me get an ATV, so that will have to be moved too:P

a class 1 or 2 hitch is all i need i found a site that carries drawtite and hidden hitch, but the shipping is probably criminal

Re: 2002 taurus sedan SE hitch question

Suck it up and go buy the new one, I've got hitches on all 3 of my Taurus's, 2 wagons and a sedan, the thought of wasting my time looking for a used hitch never crossed my mind..where would I find one, rusted solidly to the frame in a junkyard??? I installed them myself, no big deal and saved a little $$$$... all of these items are priced insanely now, I had a muffler system put on my 94, cost 278 dollars, I almost s**t my pants, had paid the previous year about 140 for an 87 Taurus wagon, guy tells me huge increases for metals, this is not even a stainless exhaust system, I asked about that considering the price, guy says oh yeah it's coated or something to that effect, which I replied so it's basically garbage metal, he agreed.. we had a good laugh, paid the bill and cried on the way home.. gotta do whatcha gotta do.

Re: 2002 taurus sedan SE hitch question

I bought a new U-haul brand hitch for my 96 Taurus wagon on ebay for $103 and the shipping was free. I'd check there. Good luck.

Re: 2002 taurus sedan SE hitch question

Did you try the bone yards yet? Expect to pull it yourself, if the rusted bolts will come off. If you pay me to crawl under my two Taurii, I can measure all you want. I'm half kidding because the last time I looked at something on my Taurus for someone else who wasn't even halfway keeping up with Rod and my help, cost me, with the help of my foggy-headedness, an engine computer. Oh well. A hard lesson learned......um....probably not.
