1) Turn the lights on High beam + Honk horn!

Does your horn work?
How old is the battery?

Try starting the car with the gear selector in neutral.

2) Visual Inspect, the battery cables going to the starter.
3) Make sure starter bolts are right + tight.
4) Lightly tap the starter selonode, than turn the key!
5) Is there oil on the starter?

Is there oil on the starter? I have yet to figure out how to change the oil filter on a 3.0l without oiling the starter. If anyone has a secret how to do that, please post it.

Re: no start/ click on my 96

took the starter to autozone they said it was OK put it back in and nothing....but i did notice the wire was not connected to the s terminal so i cleaned it put it back on and still nothing then after reading of other causes i turned the key and ran the shifter threw the gears a couple of times and it started........THANK GOD! i had to call in sick to mess with it today and i just got the thing 2 weeks ago.......the only thing i can think of is the TR sensor was out of wack

Re: no start/ click on my 96

I have a 96 GL wagon and it will do the same thing. Seems like there is something that's telling the car that it's still in gear when it's actually in park. Whenever it happens to me I just move the gear selector from drive to park until it starts. Usually works in one or two attempts.

Re: no start/ click on my 96

If the trs (aka neutral safety switch) is fully functional but seems like it just wants to start just off of park and neutral, then it may simply be out of alignment where it connects to the manual control lever at the top of the transmission. The shifter cable should connect to the same lever. If it is out of adjustment, you could simply loosen the two top retaining bolts of the trs and the nut on the control lever and try getting the car to start by trying it in either direction from where it was. Coutesy of Ford:

1. Remove nut securing manual control lever (7A256) to transmission range sensor.

2. Turn manual control lever to NEUTRAL position.

3. Loosen two TR sensor retaining bolts.

IGNORE
4. Align TR sensor slots using Transmission Range (TR) Sensor Alignment Tool (MLPS Alignment Tool) T92P-70010-AH.

5. Tighten retaining bolts to 9-12 N-m (7-9 lb-ft).

6. Install nut retaining manual control lever to TR sensor and tighten to 16-22 N-m (12-16 lb-ft).
