72 Super Beetle stalling problem

My son has a 72 or 73 Super Beetle that he bought this past summer. It had sat unused for probably a long time. We did some work on it, including a carb overhaul, then we took it to a VW shop to get it running. The car runs good, but stalls out randomly, always when he is driving, not sitting at a stop sign or light. The speed doesn't seem to matter, but I would guess that it is usually in 4th gear when it happens. After a while (minutes to half an hour or more) it will start again like nothing is wrong. It has been to the shop a couple times for this problem. They have changed the fuel pump, replaced the fuel lines, and put in a new coil. We have eliminated an electrical problem by checking for spark (which is had) after one of the stall outs. It must be something to do with the fuel line or the carb. Your ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Ken Neely

Why would some reply to a post only to belittle everyone else's cars?
Whether you have a Super or a Standard the engine is the same. The transaxle and rear suspension are the same.

What have you done to the ignition system besides the coil?
Points or condensor? Do you have a stock dizzy or a Bosch 009?

Re: 72 Super Beetle stalling problem

I had the same thing happen to my 73 super. It took me 3 months to figure it out to. It ended up being a little air getting into the fuel line, I had a crack in the line going into the engine. It was so small that I could not really see it. I checked the line once before and missed it. Once I checked it again I noticed it. Hope that works for you.
