Where to get GT40p heads??

I have read a lot on this board about some people getting GT40 or GT40p heads off of an Explorer in a junk yard. My husband and i are looking for something a little more reliable...so we were thinking of getting the remanufactured ones from Auto Zone.

Has anyone else done this?? They are about $209 each after the core, so it's definately in our price range.

Also, the gt40 heads are 96-97, and the gt40p heads are 98-2000, correct??

Thanks!!!

Re: Where to get GT40p heads??

GT40 and GT40p heads are difference in material used to make them, they should both fit ford 5.0 HO motor. But to answer your question, I built a 306 for my buddy to put in his 90 lx mustang, we bought the motor from pull-a-part and completely re-did it, and i used the "p" heads (cast iron) and ran that 306 pushing 305-310 hp no problem on the heads.

Re: Where to get GT40p heads??

Thanks for the reply!

We were looking into the remanufactured ones so that we could avoid doing head work. The heads he has now need to be rebuilt, and he isn't confident enough or exerienced enought to mess with the heads just yet. He has a set he is learning from int he garage, but with this car, we really can't afford to have any disasters. LOL

What exactly is it about the gt40 heads that creat so much more horsepower than the stock 302 heads? Bigger valves? Ports?

Re: Where to get GT40p heads??

True "GT-40" heads were not offered on any production vehicles. They're an aftermarket piece from Ford Motorsports. The production heads that are "marked" Gt-40 are similar to the "good" ones, but are more productin-oriented. The single biggest difference between them and the "standard" 302s from the '90s is the exhaust port. it doesn't have the little "bump" in it for the AIR system. I have a pair here now, for a friend's Mustang hot rod. Valve size and intake runners don't appear different.

Avoid remanufactured parts unless yours are cracked and you simply cannot FIND any. Production rebuilders use the cheapest parts known to man. They also use things like cheesy guide "liners" instead of real guides.

Having a local professional machine shop rebuild your heads would get you a much better job.

Re: Where to get GT40p heads??

So I would be better off going to the junk yard than buying remanufatured ones? I definately cannot afford the aftermarket Gt40s.

ither way, GT40s would be a lot easier to get my hands on as mustangs definately get stripped down faster than I've ever seen before in the junkyards around here.

I'm afraid to see how much a machine shop would charge for a job like that. We are on a limited budget as it is. LOL
