Question 2002 sport trac leaking fuel filling up

I have a 02 sport trac 4.0 that pours fuel from somewhere on the top of the gas tank when the gas pump kicks off during a regular fill up anyone else have this sort of problem. it only leaks when you fill it right to the top.

Two possibillities: Failed connections at the fuel lines and/or failed O-ring seal on top of tank.

Another remote possibility is the tank rusting or wearing through where water may sit or where tank to body padding has slipped/deterioriated and rubbed a hole through. Seen this only once in 42 years of working on cars.

With all of the emissions systems tied to the top of the tank, you could have a problem with the EVAP system of your Sport Trac as well.

A scan of the Component Parameters may indicate an issue in the EVAP system.

In addition to the other areas I would check the hose where the fill spout connects to the tank. Have the vehicle on a lift or jack stands. Use a flashlight and look closely. If you have a small in the tank use a large metal screw with a big faucet washer. This will hold until you get the tank close to empty so you can replace the tank yourself. It is also a lot safer if you are going to drive to a repair shop. They don't like leaking tanks in the shop until making sure nobody is smoking or has an open flame going.
