"Rhode Island Edition" Grand Prix?

Have any of you Grand Prix-ophiles ever heard of a "Rhode Island" edition Grand Prix? And do you know what, if anything, was special about it?

I've heard of some early 90s model Grand Prixs. Just a special limited edition model limited to a certain geographical area and offered only by certain GM dealerships. It did not come from the factory that way and the conversion was performed by some aftermarket coach company. They had funny or phony looking rag tops and the badging.

For example here is a similar special edition package for the Buick Regal called the Presidential Edition.

Here is a 1990 RI Edition LE model Grand Prix.

So the only difference was in the rag top then you think?

I agree with Bob about it being a "geographical special edition" and a marketing tool of sorts. I'm in NY and have seen similar marketing ploys such as a "Special Northeast Edition" aimed at trucks for sale in the Fall. I think they use these to increase sales in certain parts of the country. Generally you can't purchase these vehicles outside of the designated marketing area.

Well, obviously that was one difference along with the extra badging. There may be some interior upgrades to reflect the theme. Some of these special edition models had upgraded interior trim and possibly cushy pillow type leather seats. As far as the engine and transaxle no differences compared to the regular production models.
