Angry o/d off light flashing HELP

I have a 1999 windstar and a week or so ago the o/d light on the dash started flashing on and off all the time when we are driving down the road it always flashs and I have no idea what this means.
If anyone has had this problem or if you know what causes this and how to correct it please let me know because I am almost at my wits end with htis thing and the light on the dash. The check engine light is on still and has been for about 2yrs ( I keep fixing what it says is bad and then its back on a week later for somthing else ) and the ABS light comes on and off at different times but mostly just stays on. My dask almost looks light a christmas tree now with flashing lights and all.
Thanks for any help that anyone could give me with these problems

Re: o/d off light flashing HELP

The flashing O/D light is indicating a problem with the transmission......just like a "Check Engine" light.....for the transmission.
The best thing to do is to have the transmission codes read.
You will need to go to a good shop, that can read these proprietary (non generic) codes.

I would do this ASAP as it is possible that whatever the problem is.....could result in more damage to the transmission if you continue to drive it this way.
It could be as simple as the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS), aka Neutral Safety Switch.......or something more expensive......
You won't know until you get it checked out.
When you get the code(s) read, get the actual numeric codes from them.....write them down and post back here with them.

Your ABS light could be as simple as slightly low brake fluid level in the master cylinder......the sensor is very touchy.....and activates when the fluid level is at the bottom side of the FULL line marked on the unit.

Re: o/d off light flashing HELP

I just recently replaced my engine and had my transmission rebuilt on my 2000 Windstar. After the rebuild, my O/D light would start flashing and the torque converter wouldn't lock up any longer after driving between 5 & 15 miles at about 65 mph and wouldn't reset until the engine was stopped. The transmission shop replaced some valves, installed a shift kit, had the ECU reflashed by Ford twice. With no changes. Eventually they pulled the tranny again, installed a high performance shift kit and replaced the rebuilt torque converter with a high performance. One of these (or both) fixed it. During the process, he'd read the codes while driving it with a very advanced (to me) code reader that was able to tell us realtime what was going on and it still took them 3 weeks and several tries to get it right. The other important item to note was that the shifting would get harder the longer I drove. The shop said it was the ECU trying to compensate for the error code by increasing the line pressure.

Point is, take it to a good tranny shop. These problems are going to be very difficult for you to diagnose at home. You may want to find out what's causing the check engine light too as they may be inter-related. My long troubling EGR code turned out to be a bad sensor.
