92 Ford Taurus, When tranny fluid gets hot car wont move.
I have a 1992 Ford Taurus and when I start it up it'll shift into drive and take right off. The problem is after it goes about a mile the tranny will start to slip, until eventually the car will not move at all. So I have found that when the fluid is cold it moves and when the fluid is hot it wont. Will getting the fluid flushed and refilled fix this problem? There is no noise as the fluid heats up. I recently replaced the transmission's overdrive servo piston as well but it ran great for the first 100 miles without a hitch.

Welcome to the forum!
When you check the fluid condition and level on the dipstick, how does the fluid look and smell? Is it nice pink, or more brown? Does it have a strong odor, or rather mellow odor? Does the dipstick indicate the level is where it should be? -Rod |

Re: 92 Ford Taurus, When tranny fluid gets hot car wont move.
I'm no expert, but I've gotten the impression that at the very least it is worth doing a thorough fluid flush pump out, drain, drop and clean pan, filter replacement and put in synthetic fluid. That is something you can do yourself and the procedure can be found in the forum several times using the Taurus main page search feature. Did you not replace the fluid with the servo replacement? If it hasn't been 30k or longer since the last fluid and filter change it should be done anyway, but I imagine it is at such a degraded state that when it heats up, it looses its "guts" or viscosity. Your assesment is accurate, but hopefully just the fluid flush, filter and fluid change will be all it needs. Have you looked at the trans fluid color and smelled it on the trans dipstick? It should have a nice clean, clear, bright cherry red appearance. Dark, not clear, turning flat red to a dirty burgundy and smells burnt, pungent, bitter means it's no longer good. Unfortunately, if you have a lot of mileage on your trans, though this trans has problems even at low mileage, it may be having mechanical problems, maybe belt slippage, possibly exacerbated by the poor quality fluid. Why did you need to replace the ovedrive servo piston? What sort of symptoms were you having?
PS Hey Rod, very fast posting! You started after me and finished before me!?! ..... cough, cough, cough....!?! !@#$? e-dust! @#$#? :
