Question Lame headlights on 02' Montana???

We just picked up an 02' Montana to replace our old Lumina APV, and the headlights on this van are weak. Lenses are clean and fog-free (unlike most of these vans I see), and I even changed the bulbs to the high-output ones - yet the light coming out is pale in comparrison to the old Lumina or my Astro. last night I drove with the high beams on and nobody even flashed me to click them down. I noticed the bulbs seem to be almost entirely encased in a metal covering with vents in it, inside the lenses. This looks to me like it's blocking most of the light??? has anybody tried removing those, or can anyone tell me a fix fro these lame lights??

thanks

Re: Lame headlights on 02' Montana???

the metal covering is part of the head lamp do not remove that tin. on my 02 olds i installed the 9004SU Silverstar ULTRA for Ultra Night Vision as they are just better than the 9004ST Silverstar High Performance bulbs that i had in there be for. i also reaim the head lights to get the best of the low and high beam ( it's a fine line between hi and low due to one bulb per fixture) your right the lights are not one of the choice lamps to use. the ultras are by far the best lights to use. one thing the headlight can be put out of alinement by some one leaning on the headlight assembly. good luck. 463 What if you had more light when you needed it most, like while driving at night? Brighter light is as easy as upgrading to SilverStar® bulbs . And our newest product, SilverStar ULTRA will offer you the brightest, whitest, 100% legal halogen headlights.

SilverStar headlights meet all US and Canadian requirements (FMVSS 108 and CMVSS 108).

Re: Lame headlights on 02' Montana???

What 463 recommends is just about all you can do. These vans are notorious for having dim headlights. It has been mentioned before on this site. You're lucky the lenses are still in good shape. I often wondered if better results would be achieved by using a better quality plastic similar to some newer models that appear more clear. Another issue some have reported in the past is the deterioration of the reflective material inside the headlamp capsule which causes a poor output of light, but that doesn't appear to be your problem by your description.

You could try a conversion like this
http://cgi.ebay.ca/Pontiac-Montana-9...QQcmdZViewItem

I have not tried it myself but it might work.
