Digital speedo

Hi, I have a 99 Lumina with the 3.8l V6 with a digital speedo.

Yesterday I was changing the plugs and wires, only got 4 done. Pouring rain and the last 2 on the back I did not feel like fighting with, so I left it until the weather gets better.

Now, the car stalled today, makes sense if 2 plugs and wires are old, however I have no speedometer.

The digital display is up, it just reads 0 for the speed. The odometer and the "trip" are up on the display but fail to change.

I had also changed the oil, so I had the car jacked up on the left side just behind the front wheel.

I know that the wires were in some tight spots, but I did not unplug any sensors and as far as I can tell I have not pulled any wiring apart(inadvertantly).

I checked the fuse panel and all fuses are good.

Any sugjestions on what it could be?

any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,

Re: Digital speedo

Sounds like the Vehicle Speed Sensor is shot, or the rain shorted it out (since its AC current its more likely to than DC in my exp).

The VSS is typically on the passenger side, just above and behind the axle. That would explain the lack of speed or ODO changing, since it relies on the VSS to do both.

I'd check the wiring for continuity, if you pulled it out or if it shorted out. VSS rarely go bad on their own, usually its the wiring to go first.

Re: Digital speedo

Hey thanks for your help! Was the VSS. It got unplugged. Must have happened when I was pulling out the spark plug wire, and I must have hit the sensor wire and unplugged when I had to reaf on the plug wire to get it off.

Thanks again, for your help, saw the sensor wire just a dangling right where you said it should be!
