I thought all post '87 SBC engines came with roller cams!
I realize this thread isn't specific to Caprice's, but it does include them. Now I thought it was always common knowledge that all '87 and newer Gen I small block Chevy engines came with roller cams. A few weeks ago I was adjusting the valves on my '89 GMC pickup with the TBI 5.7 Liter 350. As it was running, the pushrods were spinning! Now I could be wrong, but last time I checked roller cams and lifters = still pushrods. Another motor... one identical to the one going into my Caprice in the next few weeks. A TBI 350 from a 1992 Chevy truck. Upon teardown, flat tappet cam and lifters! The guy tearing down the '92 engine was suprised too. Flat tappets in an '89 SBC and a '92 SBC. What gives?

Well you are correct concern the engines in CARS. Trucks didn't get the roller cams until the Vortec engine came along in...1996 I think.

Correct - only passenger car SBCs had rollers until 1996, when all received them.

The 87+ truck blocks are roller compatible even if they came with flat tappets, so this is not a big deal.

That sucks. You'd think if anything, trucks would need it more. How can you tell a roller compatable block from a non-roller compatable block?
