89 Grand Marquis

Lately I've been having a problem with the car shutting off on me when I brake hard or when I am at a stop light. The radio stays on but I have to turn the key again to start it up. I'm not sure at all what it could be. Are there any cheap ways to figure this out? It spudders a little bit then the engine just goes out. Please help!!

These cars have two fuel pumps one in the gas tank to prime the one along side the frame. If the primer pump is bad they will sometimes stall or run rough going up hill or in a sharp curve. To test get an empty coffee can disconnect it before the main fuel pump. Have somebody try to start the car you should get a good stream of gas.

Re: 89 Grand Marquis

Seeing that the OP did not state engine size, how do you know where his/her fuel pump is located? 5.0L in tank, electric. 5.8L engine mounted, mechanical. None of the two have a primer pump.

Re: 89 Grand Marquis

I have worked on a lot of older fords, mercury, lincoln town cars. They had two fuel pumps as I stated. The vast majority didn't have a 5.8l I checked in my old mitchell manual for a 1989 GM and it states most not all had two pumps both electric. Old means it only goes to 2000. The main pumps were very dependable but customers paid for a filter change which was next to the pump.

Re: 89 Grand Marquis

I just looked at my 89 ford shop manual and it has nothing listed for a prime pump. I know the 89 crown vic that we had didn't have one. My 92 grand marquis, 94 crown vic and town car or the 97 vic all dont have a prime pump. In a car that comes with a tank mounted pump a prime pump just makes no sense, But if its in the mitchell manual, and you seen them, it has to be.
