2001 oldsmobile aurora crankshaft sensor

I have a 2001 aurora 4.0 and every so often the car shuts off or wont start for about 20mins. A code pops up. After taking the battery cable off for about 20 sec. the code clears and the car runs great until my mother drives it (lol). I finally placed a scan tool on it and it displayed crank position sensor. when trying to purchase a new one, I was told that there are two:
A upper, and a lower
Q: how would i know which one?
My mechanic told me that its the lower and the top is a cam sensor
what should i do? can something else be triggering this code?

There is an upper and lower crankshaft position sensor in addition to a cam shaft position sensor.

Both the upper and lower sensors are the same part number, but you need to know which one to replace. I would assume that the PCM code would tell you this. What code is your scanner pulling?

The codes writes crankshaft position sensor and gives a code number of P0386
Please help!! which one is it?

I looked up the code at obdii.com and they said "CKP Sensor B Circuit Performance"

So its circuit 'B'. For my model year (95) circuit 'B' corresponds to the lower. I would assume that it would be the same for your year.

I just replaced both my camshaft sensor and my crankshaft sensor. You will need to replace both because they work off of one another! The camshaft sensor is EASY to replace but the crankshaft sensor is HORRIBLE!!!!!!! It is located on the front of the engine block facing the front of the car! You will have to be HOUDINI to get to it! I fixed it myself, and you can ONLY get to it by standing on the driver's side of the front fender lean over, use an EXTREMELY SMALL ratchet wrench with a 10mm socket on it but you first have to get underneath the car and DROP the STARTER down by undoing two bolts on the starter! Again, this is GM at it's finest hour (total stupidity) on the location of the crankshaft sensor! Took me nearly 5 hours to replace it!

NO MORE GM VEHICLES IN MY FUTURE!
