I have a 97 civic with 90,000 miles that has never had its timing belt changed. Is that something I should be concerned with- or can it wait? I drive about 400 miles a week...
Thanks |

It's that time again.....time to change your timing belt! Usually timing belts last for 70-90k miles. I wouldn't wait too much longer!

I just had my timing belt changed last month... 90k is definately the outside limit. The guy who changed mine seemed appalled that i waited until 75k. I think he was just bein an ass. Anyway, get it done soon. Like tomorrow. Or right now. You never know when that things gonna pop!

Honda suggests to get it replaced at around 45k, which is freakn BULLSHIT! I only let my good family friend touch the engine of my car, but i asked how much they wanted for this, and they wanted arond $600...granted its the dealer but still, we all know these belts can last easy 70K.

Yeah I wonder if mine was changed. I bought my car with 81k on the odo, and now it has 135k and I haven't touched it.

600 bucks to change a timing belt? wtf, tell them to go eat it. factory honda timing belt, just bought one a couple days ago, about 27.50. install should cost about 180 bucks i believe by dealer, but i had my friend change the belt for me while he had the head apart to take a look at my valves. so i just paid 27.50 to change belt. i heard it was 100k on hondas before timing belt change, but my friend says 80k sounds about right. you never know when the belt goes and your stranded needing a new motor when the valves smack the pistons, so i suggest you change it soon. i have seen timing belts break at 40k and i have seen them break at 250k without ever being changed. i guess it depends on the mood of the belt.

92 and newer civics got a t. belt at 9 years or 90,000 miles, ive seen um go 150,000 with no problems but ya never know. So id get it changed if you dont want problems. Also recommend the water pump a new tight timing belf will put force on an old water pump and cause it to leak, besides with the t. belt off your already at the water pump and its only another 4 bolts to replace. replace your drive belts too(a/c-alternator ans p/s) you allready have them off just buy new ones when you put it back together....
