speed sensor

a few monthes ago i did an interior swap which for some reason i ditched the old gauge cluster and put the new one in, anywayz I used a gauge cluster from an automatic and my car is a standard, only problem now is everytime i downshift i get the check engine light comin on all the time and a code 17.

so my question is does anyone know excatly where the speed sensor is so i can do the same to it as i did to the annoying door dinger and crunch it in a pair of vice grips. or if there is anyother way to fix it, although vice grips are fine with me

thanks

Re: speed sensor

Does your speedometer work? If you have your VSS unplugged from the tranny your speedometer will not work. Or if it's loose you'll get the CEL and sometimes the speedo will work or will stop working.

To plug it back in, reach down behind the battery, in front of the emissions crap and fuel filter. If you have thin arms you won't need to remove the intake or anything. And you'll see/feel a wire coming out of the tranny. There is a clip that holds it in place. If you're lost. Try to follow the speedo cable from the firewall to the tranny. There are only two cables going to the tranny... one is your clutch cable but that runs right over the top of your engine and goes to the tranny facing the front of the car, so dismiss that one.

Worst case scenario, your sensor broke inside your tranny...

Don't forget to reset your ECU after plugging it back in...

Re: speed sensor

maybe i screwed up the wiring because when i changed the dash i had to rewire alot of the car which was poorly done i might add lol, i didnt expect that the wiring would be so different between a 91 civic cx 5speed (mine) and a 89 civic dx automatic. im curious is there some where i can get the color codes for the wires for both models? oh and also how do you reset the ecu?

thanks for the response

Re: speed sensor

88-89 and 90-91 are interchangeable. Sounds like you took the difficult way out. Not sure about color coding. I do know it was posted a very long time ago. Try searching anyway.

To reset the ecu, simply pull the ecu fuse. 15a in under-hood fuse box (2nd? from top when along left side closest to firewall when looking at it from passenger side of car). You can pull the infamous hazard fuse too (the red 10a fuse at the bottom closest to passenger side) but some say it resets some say it doesn't. I used to just pull both for 30 seconds. You can undo the negative terminal of your battery too but then you lose your stereo presets etc.
