Do fuel efficient cars really save you money?


I have been working at link removed by moderator, a company specializing in classic mustang restoration and classic mustang parts of all kinds. We continue to have great business selling parts and restoring these awesome mustangs with more horses than your momma would want you to have. Now I know what your thinking how could these less fuel efficient cars save me at the pump especially with gas prices at an all time high. The true is these muscle cars probably wont save you at the pump. It’s in the almighty resale value that your going to save money. By buying an awesome muscle car you get to drive an awesome car around, and the deprecation rate of a car say like a Shelby G.T. 500 is a lot slower then that “awesome” 4 cylinder Celica you just bought. So I don’t mind putting in a few extra bucks when I drive. Because when I know it’s time to let my baby go I will be saving a lot of money. Comment Please

I can think of SO many things wrong with that post.....The one that tops my list is......its an intresting way to try to cover up unauthorized advertising.

I would agree. The link is not essential to discussing the topic at hand.

As for the topic; few people who spend on a real vintage car would drive it enough for fuel cost to seriously impact their habit.
Vintage muscle cars are a luxury, not an essential. Most luxuries are expensive, unnecessary indulgences.
If gas costs too much to run them much, the owners will simply leave them parked. ALL vintage car owners I have ever met all have modern fuel efficient cars for daily driving anyways.

Well, since you didn't close or remove this sales pitch.....

One cannot expect to buy a muscle, classic or pony car, use it as a daily driver, and then expect it not to loose value...
You would be gambling everytime you drove it. Theft, vandals, accident, and normal wear and tear all come into play. You can't treat it like your adverage car, because its not your adverage car...just ask your insurance agent.

Fuel economy and muscle car do not go in the same sentence....except this one! At best any classic would get about half the fuel economy of a car that is built for economy.

Another factor not being discussed here... Is money the ONLY measure? I think not. If driving a modern car, you're polluting MUCH less, using less fuel and in general, doing less damage to the environement. While this may sound a bit "hokey" to some, it's a very important aspect of social responsibility. The '80s and Reaganomics are gone forever.

And lastly, the "example" sited, Shelby GT500, is ludicrous. When was the last time anyone here saw one for sale anywhere but a high-end antique auction? Let's keep it "real" folks... (:-

LOL. So let's say if I drive a nice late model Z-28 with a 5.7L engine (gotta keep it GM) and and I'm burning $400-$450 a month in gas compared to driving the equivalent V6 version burning $200-$250. So, my gas savings for driving 6cyl. would be about $200 a month or $2400 a year. And if I drive it for 5 years, I'm saving $12000 over the 5 years. So, after 5 years of driving each vehicle...all things being equal of course...I'm going to be able to sell the V8 Camaro for $12000 more than the V6? I doubt it!!!

As for old cars, yes they will hold their value more than newer cars, but if I drove my Nova on a regular bases the gas bill would put me in the Poorhouse! Gas here is $1.20/L. And 72chevelleohio is right. It is too risky to use them on a regular bases.
