free mods

i know this question might have been asked before. somewhere i read about free mods, like making holes in your air box. i want to know more info on this and any other "free mods" like if they actually work or not. thanks.

You can always pull the screen off of your MAF. Makes a little difference.

how would i do that? will it affect my warranty? i know theyre not major modifications, but can you feel a difference?

I just pried mine off with a knife. I also bought an extra on ebay for 60 bucks though, just in case I messed mine up. It makes a little difference, for anything really noticable you need to spend some $$$. As far as warranty goes, I am well out of that so I have no idea...

I would love to carry mine in on a warranty fix. I'd just tell them to ignore the roll cage inside the cab and the cam lope coming from under the hood.
As for free mods.......removing the maf screen is going to cause a slight increase in engine timing. Some people feel a difference, some don't.

You can remove the throttlebody coolant line. Its two little coolant lines that run into both sides of the throttlebody under the bottom of it. The theory is in sub freezing temps, the coolant acts to heat up the air in the throttlebody faster. The reality is that most people will never need this air to be warmed up. Just remove the two coolant lines from the throttlebody and using a line connector, connect the two together and let the coolant bypass the throttlebody. Then use some sort of cap to cap off the two fittings that come out of the throttlebody.

I also used a small engine bore machine to bore my throttle body out even. If you feel inside the throttlebody, you will notice a small lip on the inside of it. Well, this can all be shaved down smooth, just be sure not to bore it out more than what is around the butterfly. If you do, the idle will be too high. I know some people that have used a dremel tool to smooth out the inside of the throttle body. I've also knife edged the throttlebody blade to increase airflow at WOT, as well as remove the back half of the bar that holds the throttlebody blade in. It isn't threaded so, therefore, it isn't needed. All of this is small and just an attempt to allow more airflow at WOT.
I'll snap a few pics of my throttlebody when I get everything moved over to my new house.

The best free mods out there is weight reduction. Anything you don't need remove.

will a cold air intake make somewhat of a difference, if yes, name brand or ebay or homemade?
i aslo want to know how can i not have my truck governed, tops at around 95mph.
the reason is, i just put 22" wheels, and it slowed my truck big time.
with my stock wheels, 17", i had good launches.

I really like my homemade cai. If you have the electric fans, its really easy to make one using a combo of hardware store bought parts with an ebay filter/heat shield. I did a write up on my homemade cai on this forum some time ago. I'll search and see if I can come up with it.
Only real way to get rid of the governor is to get a tune. There are several companies out there that will tune up your truck for a reasonable fee. About the cheapest i've seen is wait4me. They would be a very cost efficient way to get a good tune for a stock to bolt on truck. When you get deeper into the mods(cam,nitrous,etc) it will be time to look up a different tuner. My suggestions to everyone have always been either Nelson Performance or Wheatley tunes. Both of these guys are extremely talented when it comes to tuning these trucks.

i got a cold air shield off ebay with filter for around 40 shipped and it works great. i am still trying to find the pipes and fitting to do a new pipe from intake to the throttle body. i haven't had any luck. any suggestions where to go to find these parts?? thanks

No doubt. You can piece together a super nice complete cai for around $100 including the filter and heat shield.

Besides the air filter and heat shield, which parts would you need? I am thinking a tube and 90 deg. elbow? The MAF and that rubber should transfer? Also what size would I need for a 5.3 with a stock throttle body? Thanks!
