I would like to change the serpentine belt, I was looking at it yesterday and i noticed that(facing the engine )the right side of the belt seems chewed up(outside of belt) and the left side seems fine. What could be causing this? When I change it what pulley should I start on, is there a procedure?
Thanks in advance !! |

Re: 2000 Montana serpentine belt
Totally going on memory here...
As I recall, the tensioner has a square hole in the middle that exactly fits a 3/8" ratchet. Insert the ratchet into the tensioner and pull toward you, and that loosens the tensioner enough to remove the belt. I don't really remember any tricks to replacing the new belt. I do remember thinking it would be helpful to have an arm growing out of my forehead, though. |

Re: 2000 Montana serpentine belt
There is a diagram under the hood on the water pump that will help, as mentioned above, use a 3/8 ratchet and pull on the tensioner to get get some slack and pull it loose. Use a good replacement belt (Gates from Napa or Goodyear Gatorback from Autozone). Something does not seem right with what you are describing, sounds like one of the pulleys may be out of wack. Our harmonic balancer went at around 150,000 miles, the belt would make it way half way off the pulleys. After you get the belt on start it and watch to see if it moves one way or the other and try to narrow down which pulley is off. You have 2 idler pulleys, water pump, alt., ac compressor and harmoic balancer to look at, one of them may be the culprit.
