Rear brakes - calipers destroyed?
oh crap. I just finished rebuidling the rear brakes on a 2004 Mustang(V6), only to find (from talking to a friend) that I may have destroyed them. I couldn't figure out why I was having so much trouble collapsing the piston (w/ a C-Clamp per the Haynes repair manual), only to learn that it SCREWS in. I thought it was because the car had sat for about a year.
Unfortunately, I was able to collapse them with a C-Clamp and put everything back together. However, I wonder now if I've actually destyoyed the piston or at least the Parking Brake mechanism. The brakes seem to work fine, but I have not tried the parking brake (we live in flat country). Have I probably broken the calipers? |

Re: Rear brakes - calipers destroyed?
They make a tool that screws the piston back it.
It looks like this. http://www.eurocarparts.com/sealey/images/VS024.jpg

Re: Rear brakes - calipers destroyed?
Thank, wish I knew about that earlier. Everything seems to work okay, including the parking brake, so I'm hopeful I didn't hurt anything too badly. I'm still concerned, tough...

Re: Rear brakes - calipers destroyed?
It took quite a bit of force, in fact I ruined one C-Clamp in the process (yes, that should have been a big 'ol clue). However, I did notice that once the pistion started to move, it rotated. I thought it was just rotating with the C-Clamp screw, but now I know better.
