I have a 94 Chevy K1500. I have power to the Hi beams and they work. Low beams have no power at the plug where it connects to the bulb. The bulbs are good as I have already tested them. My driving lights work as well. The parts store(napa) said it is most likely the hi/lo beam switch in the column. There are no bad fuses either. How do I change the switch? What is the process? I am 17 and only make 100 bucks a week, I can't afford a mechanic and my dad let me use this site...Please help!!

Re: How do I change the hi/lo beam switch?
There is a small switch on the top/left of the steering column that is activated by a push-rod that is moved when you pull on the lever. Depending on exactly where it is, you may need to partially drop the steering column. Just keep turning the highbeams on and off until you find the rod that runs down the stereing column and follow it to the switch (it moves about 1/2" or so). I think there's 2 nuts and a screw holding it on, and on my '86 it shares the studs for the ignition switch.

ok, I found that and you are right but I started to take the directional lever stuff off and now am not sure how to get it back together. Is there a diagram in a book somewhere that I can refer to? i will buy it if there is, is it in a repair manual? My dad says I should buy one since older vehicles sometimes need more repair.

Re: How do I change the hi/lo beam switch?
I may be wrong here, but I don't think you have to remove the multi-function switch to change the hi/lo switch. On my truck, there are two stud-bolts that hold the ignition switch on, and two nuts that go onto them to hold the hi/lo switch on. I lost that screw I told you about, and I must have left the nuts loose because while driving one day the hi/lo switch just fell out.
A repair manual may have a diagram, but from what I've seen (only used one for a '91 toyota tercel that I owned in highschool) there aren't many useful pictures. They're good for step-by-step procedures, but the pictures were only to identify parts. A factory repair manual would have it almost for sure, but they're expensive. It's been so long since I've had a steering column apart that I really couldn't tell you what goes where without seeing it. I told a guy how to do it awhile back, I'll see if I can find that post... otherwise all I can do is wish you luck.
