Cool car to do Sean, i really liked this car and how nimble it was up against the might of the more fancied teams, look forward to seeing more.

Re: WIP: Williams FW12 1/20

update:

so much for having more time to spend at the desk... best laid plans as they say...

anyway, engine & trans...

I have painted this generally as per the instructions, flat alu for the block, dark metallic grey for the trans and for the wing support I have used some 1/24 scale C/F decal. However if you look at the next pic...

... everything to the left of the red line is completely hidden which while it saves me alot of time detailing, I do find it as though Im only doing half a model, something I have always disliked about curbside F1 kits... Hey ho!

I am adding a few details to the trans area and have washed/dry brushed this area to add a little further detail. The rear light has been replaced by a new white version for the FW12 too.

This is the revised cooler that sits on the top of the trans and fit snuggly into the engine cover. However I will remove the two cyclindrical items either side and replace these with the Tamiya versions as they are much better detailed.

Finally after priming, C/F Decaling and spraying...

the front wing is finished just a few rivets on the end plates need picking out.

all so far so good as they say and thanks amillion for your kind comments and for following. Oh and to Flhansen... hope I can ahieve as good a finish on the body as you have done, great work!

Hi Sean

Sure you can!

I'm struggling with the rear wing. I think that I have to make some other endplates than the etched ones from the transkit, as I find the assembly very flimsy with that heavy main element. The etched endplates also lack some 3D feeling I think.

Will you make a specific race? The markings changed a lot during the season you will probably find out. Mostly the various ICI products advertised, but also the placement of 'Canon' on the sidepods.

I always enjoy seeing your new projects and the historical aspects about them that you introduce in the beginning. Everything is coming along great especially the way the wip is layed out with your comparision photos.

Hi Flemming,

yes Im going for the Mansell - Hungarian GP with the full tobacco markings and the ICI 'tricotex' markings on the front wing endplates.

It seems like the ICI brands chaged every race, on top of that there is the tobacco/non-tobacco markings... all very confusing.
The S27 instructions explain it all very nicely though thankfully!

Re: WIP: Williams FW12 1/20

more progress...

I did 'the usual' with the rear suspension...

... and removed the moulded springs, drilled the top and bottom sections, inserted a metal rod into each, about a third of the length of rod is covered with a piece of black rubber tubing and then over the top I used some wire curled around a small screwdriver shank for the new spring. As always a little time consuming but much more realistic than the horrible moulded versions.

I will try and get a better picture up of the finished units.

I also added the remaining details to the top of the trans and also added a little extra detail in the shape of a couple of hoses which run from the cylinders on the top of the trans to each suspension strut.

For the rear axles, I thought they were a little under detailed comared to the real versions so using some extremely thin sections of wire painted gold I added these to the trans end of the axle. I will also add some little bolt heads to these too just to finish them off.

The brake cooler ducts are covered in C/F.

Finally the shell has its coat of white on...

I have the Williams yellow from the Zero Paints range which will go on next but that will be a few days away while the white dries properly.

more to come again soon and thanks for following guys!

Rob,

I have it on good authority that the yellow is the same as the Lotus Camel yellow which is the one I intend to use (plenty left over from my 99T build). There was a debate over at F1M about it not so long ago if I remember rightly.

Hope I'm right on this one

Sean

Hi

Do not make the same mistake as me. The yellow I used was TS34 which to me is too orangey which I found out in retrospect. Go for a yellower yellow, as the weren't sponsored by Camel at that time. It should be a bright yellow like TS-16.

Didn't you change your earlier post about which race? I think it said Portuguese, but now it is Hungary. I was there at Estoril in 1988 - but as you surely found out Mansell DNF'ed in that race. Got a few pictures from that race, but only at a quality that today would suffer the delete button on my digital SLR :-( It is all about the glass!

Flemming,

thanks for the heads up but too late the yellow is down! however there was a raging debate about the yellow on the Williams FW12 over at F1M and that because they were partly sponsored by Camel at some of the races that season. I will try and find the thread and post a link here - it was a very heated debate as I remember rightly

Also well spotted about the race, dont know how I got Portugal and Hungary mixed up but it is definately the Hungarian GP - Mansell car.

???

Which races were that? I tend to doubt that. Barcley is smoke as well, so I don't think that a double exposure of smokers are likely. Michele Alboreto had to abandon his Marlboro ties when driving for Tyrrell due to Camel sponsorship. In 1988 Lotus had the big Camel sponsorship and Benetton and Tyrrell had a small one.
