1995 GT Engine Rebuild + Supercharger
I have a 1995 Grand Am GT with a 3.1L v-6 3100SFI engine and automotic transmission. It came stock with 150hp. The car has about 93,000 miles on it, and I want to beef it up. I want to do a complete engine rebuild, bore the engine, and put in a supercharger. I have basic knowledge on how engines work as well as superchargers and what not but I don't have the expertise to do it myself so I'd have to take it to a shop. What all should I redo on the engine? I know I should get forged pistons and aluminum heads, but what else should I upgrade on the engine? I know this is going to be expensive, but whats a ball park estimate? And about how much horsepower do you think I'll get out of this? Also does anyone make aluminum heads for this motor? Or am I going to have to get one custom made?
Thanks for any help/advice ____________________________________________ 1995 Grand Am GT Black 17" Chrome American Racing Rims Weapon R Secret Weapon intake short ram Racing mufflers No exhaust resonator custom painted interior Red/Black Leather Racing Seats Sony Xplode head unit Sony Xplode door and rear speakers Autotek SX2150 300W Amp 2-10" Audiopipe Subwoofers 600W RMS |

Re: 1995 GT Engine Rebuild + Supercharger
3.4 head should work and they are aluminum.
Plan on spending a lot for a rebuild and any boring, $2000-3000 maybe more. Plus a super charger is about $4400, and at that point I would consider buying a GTP or some other boosted car. But internaly you'd want to upgrade your pistons and connecting rods, the cam and crank, plus chrome moly push rods, best lifters you can get. Performance bearings would be a good idea too, for everything that has one. You wont see 200hp unless your running some boost on your 95 3.1. I have a 3.4 block I'm getting ready to rebuild for boosting purposes. I'll be doing all the work, machining and what not, and I'll still probly spend close to $2500 or more for just (performance) parts. Good Luck and keep us posted!

Re: 1995 GT Engine Rebuild + Supercharger
Thanks I appreciate it. Its probably going to be a while before I actually get around to doing the rebuild... Probably this summer or later. I have about 3 grand right now I need to keep saving... and gas prices aren't helping me out. I don't want to start on this project and run out of money in the middle.
Also, with all these upgraded internals on the engine, what kind of boost psi do you think it could handle? I mean I don't want to blow the engine but more air means more gas which means a bigger explosion = more horsepower = me happy |

Re: 1995 GT Engine Rebuild + Supercharger
Gas prices are becoming a problem for me too...
After I build this I should build an electric car that never needs a plug in. ![]() You stock engine with no engine problems could do 6-8 psi with out much trouble. Rebuilt possibly 12-15 psi , not real sure, i'll be finding out though . Just remember 1 psi = approx 10 hp

Re: 1995 GT Engine Rebuild + Supercharger
If you find the cam bearings spun, throw the block out and it is automatically junk. The 3100 is known for breaking cams in half and washing out the cam bearings. If you think it is the cam due to being hollow in the middle, you are wrong and I know why.The block was casted in China and the cam journals were casted offset breaking the cam.GM did put in chincy cam bearings too. This is what I heard from a Jasper rep I know.Jasper fixes this problem by alighn boring the cam journals and putting in updated cam bearings which is the fix.Jasper is the only one that does this and no one else does it

Re: 1995 GT Engine Rebuild + Supercharger
What do people do to their engines to allow them to withstand 30-35psi of boost? I've seen some people do this with the twin turbo setup in the Toyota Supra... I'm just curious what they do.

Re: 1995 GT Engine Rebuild + Supercharger
its the transmission... the 4t45e which is on the grand am (correct me if im mistaken) cant handle as much power thus limiting your psi cause too much will cuz the tranny to go

Re: 1995 GT Engine Rebuild + Supercharger
So if I replaced the transmission or had it rebuilt at the same time my car could withstand more boost? This wouldn't have any negative effects on the engine interals since I will be upgrading the engine correct?

Re: 1995 GT Engine Rebuild + Supercharger
I'd have to get a new torque converter too to handle the increased torque... I think my car just ate my wallet
