1998 Honda Accord hard steering when cold
I have a 1998 Honda Accord, 4 door 4 cylinder wth 173,000 miles, that I experience hard steering with when it is cold outside and the car has not been driven. It usually gets better after it has been driven a while.
Any ideas would be appreciated. |

First check the belt, it could just be a really glazed or loose power steering belt that won't grip until it gets warmed up a bit...
If that's ok, then you probably are looking at a steering rack with eroded/cracked seals, or a sticky power valve in the pump. Is it equally hard to turn both ways, or do you get some assist one way but not the other?

It seems to be equally hard in both directions.

OK...usually steering rack seals will cause binding in one direction but not the other...
If the belt checks ok and isn't slipping, you might try a flush...see if you can wash out whatever's making the valve(s) stick... I've had luck removing the return line from the pump (low pressure), route it into a bucket or pan that can hold a few quarts...you'll need a helper...start the motor and begin pouring Dexron tranny fluid into the pump as it pumps out into the catch container...it goes fast, about as fast as you can pour... Make sure the helper shuts it down right away on your signal before the pump is empty, open another one and start the motor and repeat...have them turn the wheel back and forth while you pour...run two or three quarts through like this, then begin adding Honda spec fluid, keep adding until it comes out clear in from the return hose (the Dex is red)...probably will take 2-3 pints of Honda fluid to chase the Dex out... It's actually more effective to flush with the return line removed at the rack, but it's pretty hard to get to on most I've seen.... Anyway, this will set you back about $20 for fluids...well worth the gamble. It usually comes out dark and sometimes even has particulates in it at first, then begins to clear up...

Whew! I got lucky! It turns out my problem was that the belt was not riding in the bottom pulley correctly. The edge of the belt was riding on the pulley flange and had worn a groove into the belt.
Thanks to jeffcoslacker for your advice! You got me focused in the right area. |
