90 century wagon 3.3 rough idle & shifting

i recently inherited a 1990 century wagon 3.3 with 100,000 mile on it. car was parked for a couple years. when car is cold it starts right up and runs and shifts great, but if i shut car off and restart immediately "service engine soon" light comes on and it idles and runs noticably rougher. car is still drivable but hesitates on acceleration and downshifts hard. sometime it will stall at a stop. i got clean gas in it, new fuel filter, o2 sensor and pcv valve.
any ideas??????

Pull the codes that are causing the check engine light to come on and post them here. That will help us help you without guessing. There's a myriad of sensors and issues that can cause your symptoms.

Re: 90 century wagon 3.3 rough idle & shifting

EWWWW!! the dreaded code 42. Code 42 has to do with the spark advance, which is controlled via the ECM through inputs from a myraid of sensors. The most common causes of this code is a bad ICM (or the wiring to it), or the ECM (or the wiring to it) especially if it is the only trouble code stored. Other components that can cause this code will usually trip a code of their own (ex. crank sensor, cam sensor, TPS, etc...).

Re: 90 century wagon 3.3 rough idle & shifting

ok well thanks for the help. maybe i will start witha new ICM....i was trying some different things today and i can run the code scanner and it gives me code 12, which is the diagnostics code. then i get code 42, but then i can start the car with the code scanner plugged in...and i have to give it a little gas, but the car will start and the code scanner flashes more rapidly on the dash. when i remove the code scanner the service engine soon light goes off and the car runs fine. so that leads me to believe that it is one of the two things you said it might be...thanks!!!!!
