01 Cavalier Steering wheel noise.
I own a 2001 Cavalier with just over 80,000 Kms on it. Lately I have noticed a whining noise when turning the steering wheel. This noise is happening inside the vehicle only. It happens when I turn both left and right. I cannot hear this noise when I am outside the vehicle. Any ideas what it may be?
Also I notice that when I am braking or slowing down at an intersection the tachometer seems to jump all over the place. It will move from just under 500 rpm to almost 2000. Any ideas what may cause this. I was thinking that it might be water in the gas tank. |

Re: 01 Cavalier Steering wheel noise.
Power steering pump is most likely shot.

Re: 01 Cavalier Steering wheel noise.
Have you checked the Power Steering Fluid level? If it is low, look for a leak or loose connection. P/S systems can suck air in the return lines and not leak fluid. Is the fluid crystal clear? If it is not clear that may be due to air trapped in the system.

Re: 01 Cavalier Steering wheel noise.
The fluid level seems fine. No visible leaks either. Is it true that there is a bearing in the steering wheel assembly itself. Could this be a cause of the noise? It seems weird that it only happens inside the car itself. No noises can be heard outside the car.

Re: 01 Cavalier Steering wheel noise.
Do you suppose that it could just be the ccccold causing this whine you hear . My `00 has abit of a whine also and that is what I attribute it too, I hate the cold and I`m not too crazy about the car either ........lol

Re: 01 Cavalier Steering wheel noise.
There is an upper bearing and lower bushing in the steering column. Bearings will fail but it is rather uncommon. Is your fluid clear indicating no air in the system? Can you duplicate the noise with the engine off? If you have a floor jack raise the front end so you can turn the steering wheel back and forth easily. You may still have a noise in the steering system. I have heard noise from the spool valve in the steering gear travel up to the inside of the vehicle but not really be heard as abnormal from under the hood.

Well I think I may have found the issue. I let the car sit for a few hours and I went to check the fluid again. It is actually quite low, about a half inch below the cold mark. I am going to get some more fluid and see if that takes care of the problem with the noise. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I love how the people in these forums are so willing to help each other out.
I will try to see if adding fluid will help and if it does then I have to figure out where the leak is. Thanks again everyone. |
