04' 4x4, rear to front LSD?

Hi everyone.

Was thinking about a story a coworker told me about his old suburban. His rear ring gear gave out and all he had to to get her home was was pull the driveshaft, put her in 4wd, and drive it home with the front doing the work. got me thinking:

I don't have a LSD on my 04' QC 1500 slt 4x4, but was wondering if there is some sort of limited slip setup front-rear, so at least 2 wheels get torque all the time. I was planning on goin off-roading with it soon, and if it doesn't have that I really need to watch what i get myself into. One wheel in the air and it's all over. Anybody know if it does? If not, is it difficult or, more importantly, expensive to install that?

thanks for your replies!

Re: 04' 4x4, rear to front LSD?

bump

i know it's only been a day, but i thought this would be a really simple question to answer. has anyone gotten a single wheel in the air and just sat there and spun that one wheel?

is there something controlling/limiting power distribution front/rear?

thanks

True 4WD is really 2WD when you have open diffs. The transfer case will put power forward and backword no matter what if working properly. But if you lift a tire then that axel is useless. And then your down to a single tire pushing you. The dodge ram did have the option of a “anti spin rear differential” or limited slip. Witch means if one tire spins it will push on a cluch that will make the other spin. The more it spins separate from the other the more pressure is put on the clutch. Look at the diff cover and see if there is a metal tab on one of the bolts that sticks out. This is to let you know that’s it’s a limited slip. Or you can give your vin to a dealer and they can tell you if your truck is equipped with this. Also if your does have this it will only work if you diff has the friction additive in the gear oil.

Re: 04' 4x4, rear to front LSD?

Thanks for the reply HV2. But I'm well aware how a limited slip works, and I already know I don't have one in the rear. I just need to know if the transfer case has a means of managing power front to rear (much like a limited slip works left to right), so if a front wheel comes off the ground, is the rear end still going to get power?

did you answer that question when you said "But if you lift a tire then that axel is useless" ?

thanks again

Re: 04' 4x4, rear to front LSD?

Think of the transfer case as a locked differential. Same amount of turns coming out of both ends regardless of traction. I know my grand Cherokee has the Quadra drive 2 witch has both front and rear limited slip and the transfer case acts like one also. But all the dodge trucks and every other jeep have a “solid lock between drive shafts. Witch is also why you shouldn’t run 4WD on a flat dry surface it just puts extra stress on the transfer case because the driveshafts want to turn the same speed.

so i'd have to get a front AND rear tire in the air to be completely f'd. and if I manage to do that, i'm probably pretty screwed anyway. nice, thanks hv2!

Oh yah I have been there. Just not quit enough articulation on dry surface and come to a teetering stop.
