1998 Intrigue Front Speaker Replacement

This is my first post here, and I am posting somewhat out of desperation. I am in the process of upgrading my sound system in my car and can't figure out what the wires are on the stock front door speakers. I have no problems getting to the speakers, but once I get there, I am not sure how to disconnect them properly. I want to replace them with a pair of Pioneer TS-G1341R speakers. I checked with places like Crutchfield and such and they should be compatible. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

disconnect them properly? Snip the wires? The aftermarket speaker should come with wiring to connect to the wires in the doors (with slide on terminals for easy connection) Are you trying to figure out the order of the wires? (positive and negative?) If so you can do the 9v battery test. Please explain what you want to do in more detail...

Re: 1998 Intrigue Front Speaker Replacement

Well, the speakers themselves have a plug into them from the car, not just wires soldered onto the connectors. Then out of the speaker is another plug that leads to the tweeters up top (intrigues have component speakers). Do I have to cut off the connector to expose the wires from the factory plug? If I remember correctly, the wires were blue and green, not the standard black and red. If I connect the aftermarket speakers without the tweeter, would the sound be the same? Also, Thank you for responding so quickly!

Re: 1998 Intrigue Front Speaker Replacement

Welll, there are two ways to do it:

1) The cheap way: you cut the wires going to the speaker (black harness and all), strip the wires and crimp on some female speaker terminals. With this method you will have to figure out which is positive and which is negitive. It's not critical, but it is better if you have them connected properly.

2) The slightly expensive but incredibly simple way: Go order a pair of speaker harneses which will convert your existing GM harness into two universial speaker terminals. When it arrives you simply unplug the factory speaker from your existing harness and then plug the new harness into that. Then you plug the two terminals from the new harness into your new Pioneer speaker (positive and negitive are different sizes so it's impossible to screw it up), and you're done.

I went with number 2 when installing my speakers, becuase it's just a much cleaner, more reliable connection. ...And I have this werid thing about cutting factory harnesses off of my cars; I just can't stand doing it. BTW: if you order those speakers from Crutchfield, they will give you the correct adapter harnesses for free. But you'll pay a lot more for the speakers from them...

Thanks a million, I'll do it that way, I found some on ebay for fairly cheap and will make the job that much easier! Do the back speakers need the speaker wire harnesses as well? If so I'll need to order another pair. Thanks again!!

Sounds like youve got everything figured out, but I do recommend keeping the stock tweeters.

All you have to do is adapt the wiring from the tweets into whatever route you went with when you wired up the speaker. Just tie into the wiring to the tweeter before the little box and everything else will take care of itself.

They will add to your sound, and wont take away from your speakers, so keep them.

Re: 1998 Intrigue Front Speaker Replacement

Yes, the rears use the same harness. Order a couple pairs...

And BTW, the rears are a real bitch to get to. I wrote a how-to guide with pics a few weeks ago when I upgraded mine, but I totally forgot about it until now! () I just need to sort though the pictures and put them in the right places, then I'll post it as soon as I get a chance. So stay tuned for that!

Rears arent too bad, I just wouldnt get in an emotional relationship with those black body clips, because it will end horribly.

Ah yes... I highly recomend people just clip those off if they want to keep their sanity. I found a place online which sells them dirt cheap anyway. Unfortunatly, you have to buy a 30 pack just to get the 3 you need...

ok Tobey, where's the link for the cheap body clips? I need some after a blower/fan motor r&r & will probably be needing more in the future. Thanks.

Re: 1998 Intrigue Front Speaker Replacement

Just to let everyone know, Best Buy and Circuit City both carry those wiring harnesses (11.99 and 10.99, respectively). You have to ask for them in the automotive section, because they don't have them on the floor. I think the price with tax ends up being cheaper than the online prices with shipping and all.
