99 Explorer Making Strange Vibration After Timing Chain Replacement

A friend of mine has a 1999 Ford Explorer that required a new timing chain be put on. She took it to a local mechanic and had him do the work. He ended up messing the install up and as a result her serp. belt was shredded to pieces and got wrapped around the cooling fan. Once she got that removed and took it back to the mechanic to have him fix his mistake he discovered that he had put the wrong size belt on the car. This has since been fixed, but now there is a strange vibration that occurs when you press on the throttle and when the Explorer shifts gears (it's an auto). Does anyone have any thoughts as to what could be causing this vibration? I know next to nothing about Fords, so I have no clue what it could be. She thinks he might have disconnected something and forgot to reconnect it once the work was done. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Can you describe the "strange vibration" a bit more? Does it seem like a misfire? Is it felt in the body of the Explorer, or through the steering wheel, etc." Does the vibration change with engine speed (more you press on throttle, more violent the vibration)? Is she sure it wasn't there before?

I'll have to ask her for more details when she gets in to work this morning. I believe she indicated that it did increase in severity based on engine speed. She is 100% positive that it was not there before, it only occurred after the mechanic got in there and started "fixing" problems.

Ask her if it happens when it shifts into a certain gear, or if it starts at a certain MPH.

Re: 99 Explorer Making Strange Vibration After Timing Chain Replacement

I spoke with her, and she said that it can be felt in the steering wheel and gas pedal. It doesn't matter what speed, but it can be better felt when the car shifts gears. The "Mechanic" (and I use that term loosely) said that he thinks it happened when he jacked up the engine to install the new timing chain, and mis-aligned it when he dropped the engine back down. He's gonna look at it again tomorrow, hopefully 4th time is the charm.....but I'm not holding my breath....

Ok, well keep us updated. Hope this guy learns what he's doing and not screw her truck up anymore.
