Are they any good? I found a 2001 escape xls for $6,578 which is 5spd manual. It has 99,857miles on it. Is this to many miles?

Re: Look to buy a 2001 escape xls
The Escapes are pretty good....but............this one you are interested in is one of the first ones produced. Like any newly released model, they work out the bugs with each year it's built. It's seven years old, and will likely be in the 'nickel and dime' phase of continual parts wearing out. Suspension, exhaust, electrical parts, perhaps some major mechanical components too. This would be true of any used 7-year-old vehicle - not just this one.
So, in my opinion - from the few details you've given - this is way too high a price to pay. I just looked at Kelly Blue Book value and came up with 4,700 bucks in good condition. And even that might be too much to pay if you have no history on the car. That is another thing....do you know the previous owner? Did they change the oil regularly and also perform scheduled maintenance? If not, it is quite common nowadays for a typical car owner to nearly completely ignore all maintenance and simply trade it in when the car starts to fall apart. Having said that, if you don't know the history on the car it's probably worth only $2,500. And if it shows signs and has proof of being maintained it might be worth $4,000 if everything works and the paint, interior and body are in very good shape. Hope this helps - let us know what you decide. Tom
