97 avenger cranks but wont start

I've had the car sitting for a while, it ran before I parked it. The battery was low from sitting about 9volts or so, I tried to jump start it but that wouldnt work. So I replaced the battery. Now it cranks but will not start. I smell fuel so I think the fuel pump is fine. Would the car crank at all if the starter was bad? Any Ideas what my problem is? The check engine light isn't on, so no codes.

Well, I hope you have it fixed by now. If it cranks good then the starter is probably ok. I always check for codes, even if the MIL isn't on, just a habit. The MIL should come on when you cycle the key, even if just for a few seconds.

If the vehicle cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank the engine, while you check for spark at the plugs. If you have spark go to the fuel system. Even if you smell gas, check fuel pressure any way.

Sometimes a shorted O2 heater circuit can cause a voltage problem for any circuit controlled by the ASD relay. You might try unplugging the O2 sensors, then try to start the vehicle.

I really hope you have it started by now, but for future reference you need to hold the gas pedal to the floor and turn the engine over. It should start after a few attempts. You flooded the engine, that is why you smelled gasoline and that is why it doesn't start. I had the exact same problem with my 1999 Avenger.

i think this is too late...but my started in my 97 avenger died out and absolutely no sound occurs if the starter dies
