2 new CKP and 1 new CPS. 10,000 miles and both bad again!?!
I have a 2001 Intrigue with the 3.5L engine, and at 80,000 miles, the car dies on the freeway. Got it towed, scanned it and got the error code to replace the CKP. I did so, and about 5,000 miles later the service light comes on. I read the codes, and now it says both the CKP and CPS are bad. Replace them both. Now about 10,000 miles later, service light comes on and both codes are read again. What gives??? What is causing these sensors to go bad at the same time and so often? Is there something I should be looking at to cure the problem or should I just keep replacing them as they go bad?

What are the exact codes? Also there is a learning process that is suppose to be done after you replace the crankshaft sensor. Others have had luck not doing this process but maybe that is causing the problems.

I dont have the codes with me right now, but they are the common codes for both the CKP and the CPS. As for the learn process, does that have anything to do with the CPS?

The learn process is supposed to be mandatory for the CKP, but most folks get away without it, as was stated that could be your problem, although I would think you would have noticed it before 5000 miles.
The CPS isnt supposed to require a learn procedure. So I dont think thats an issue. Have you inspected the wiring to these sensors?

are these GM sensors you are using or some aftermarket brand.
Always go GM on these sensors. RockAuto.com or GMpartsDirect can get you a fair price. |

They are GM sensors purchased from rockauto. I guess I will have to check the wiring from there sensors.

Re: 2 new CKP and 1 new CPS. 10,000 miles and both bad again!?!
I think what panzer is asking is what were the codes the second time (10,000 miles out). The reason everyone is asking for the specific codes is there is normally a certain procedure to follow to diagnose the problem. Right now you are simply replacing parts which is fine if you like working on the same problem over and over again and have stock in Delco. Just saying it is the codes associated with the CKP and CPs is not enough information for anyone to help you. Trust me, these folks like helping people solve their problems. We are not trying to be a pain but the specific codes are vital to anyone giving you the advise you need. Otherwise we are simply guessing. My guess is the sensors are not the problem. They could be bad NOW but something is causing them to not work properly.

Re: 2 new CKP and 1 new CPS. 10,000 miles and both bad again!?!
I don't think we have seen a CKP or CPS sensor that went bad not throw out an OBD2 code (multiple times). My CPS was acting up for a month before it did throw a code (slow starting) ---> but eventually it got worse and threw me the OBD2 bone (code).
If someone has AllData or the Service manual there must be a resistance check or something to test these sensors. |

-CPS --> a possibility --> a 2000 Saturn CPS I have seen go out and the car just died. But it threw a code. |

Opps. I was thinking I was responding to a different post. I had two codes, but I do not remember what they were.

Re: 2 new CKP and 1 new CPS. 10,000 miles and both bad again!?!
When my CPS and CKP failed, they both threw out codes. As soon as the sensors were replaced, the problems and codes disappeared and have not yet returned in two years. They failed separately like 6 months apart.
The replacement CPS was ac delco and i believe the CKP I used was standard motor products. |
