Will it work?!

I have an 89 XJ 4.0 auto (AW-4) with selectrac. I have come to have an complete driveline out of an mid 90's XJ. This I know because of the IAC on the back of the T-body. It is a 4.0 HO engine. My questin is, will the base engine and tranny work in my 89. All bolt locations look identical. I know the intake and electronics on the 90's engine won't work, but I need a good long block. This model engine has the header type manifold, Or I got really lucky and it has the Banks header on it!!

Best thing to do is if you have a donor vehicle and it has everything in place ie wiring harness, computer, and everything else the it will work if you swap everything. If you have a 4.0 and the donor engine is a 4.0 after you pull it and the tranny out of the donor car before you put it in your's great suggestion would be to change the CPS and rear main oil seal as they would be alot easier to change with the engine on a stand. But as long as you get the engine, tranny, transfer case, ECM, TCM, and wiring harnesses it should be rather painless to do. That is assuming that everything on the donor engine worked in the first place.

Well, all that I have is the engine, tranny and t-case. No wiring harness or PCM. Can I still use the long block and reuse my intake, as to reuse the original PCM and wiring? WIll the wiring for the tranny be the same, they are both the AW-4 tranny, but wasn't sure if there was a change to the electronics.

I don't believe that there would be a problem with the engine, as for the tranny I'm not sure if it was changed or not. Give alohabra a chance to chime in on this one since he owns a late 90's rig and see what he says. The intake shouldn't matter as you can swap the early year squared off intakes for the late 90's 2000 intakes that are rounded more to allow better airflow so intake doesn't seem to be a problem.

Everything should work OK. There really is not much difference between the 89 and 90 engine or trans. If it were newer, say 92-99, then you may need the computer for the engine and/or trans. The wiring is still the same from the 89 to 90. I have routinely swapped parts between 87, 89, and 90 models, with no or few issues.

Ok, what if I drop the engine and tranny in my 89 and use the existing electronics and T-body? I would be then using the existing computer and harnesses, any changes to sensor locations could be handled with a couple wiring mods, as long as the PCM sees what it needs to run correctly.

HI...just got back from vacation. That is what I would recommend to start...use the existing electronic stuff. The 90 transmission is likely to be close to the same (Mechanically..it is the same but the computer might have a version change. I would have to do some service manual research to be sure). So...that is just a quick answer for your question.

I guess it comes down to research, I'll see about getting the exact year from the engine and tranny numbers. Then go from there. Thanks for all your inputs.

I have the engine here, Here are some Numbers. Tranny: Model# 30-43LE 5210 4210AB Serial# 97KE712967. Engine: Valvecover- 53011270M2XJ/92708257281852. Block- 53010341 NVH IF 103/97. Not sure what these numbers mean as far as the model year, but I plan on trying to drop this engine into my 89. I would like to use the tranny too, but not sure if the electronics will be the same.
