I have a 1998 Olds Silhouette, it bogs out when it hits 3500 rpms. It's a V6 3.4L engine. It acts like I am not getting enough fuel or too much fuel. I took it to my mechanic, he cleaned the injectors, and it still did it. He did a bunch of other stuff too, but he couldn't find anything wrong. I took it to an Oldsmobile dealer, they scanned it, and nothing came back, so they want to put in a new computer to see if that is the problem. I have looked everywhere on the internet to try to find out if anyone else has had the same problem with their GM V6 3.4L engine. I love my van, but this problem is driving me crazy! If anyone has any input on this problem, I would greatly appreciate any help in solving this matter.
Thanx |

Hi. Did you consider that it may be a transmisson issue? My olds van "boggs" some times when the transmisson is shifting,It is a torqueconverter shift solonoid problem that I am having. Do you work in vheicles yourself? I also would check fuel pump pressure,if you dont think it is transmisson problems. Let me know what you come up with.Have a good day!! Diesel 1962..

Did your dealer check the computer while driving? I had a similar problem causing the engine to stall on long right hand turns, like coming onto the freeway. Read my rather long winded reply to "Rough Idle on 1998 Silhouette 3.4", it's even more relevent to your situation.
If you haven't changed the O2 sensor in a while, try that before the computer. Also if you want to try diagnosing the van yourself spend the 80 bucks and get an OBDII decoder for a laptop or PDA. Go to http://www.scantool.net/index.htm and check out the decoder for GM Cars. Let us know what you find 94 |

We have been having problems with our 99 Silhouette, V6 3.4 also. The problem I have had is I'll be driving along and all of a sudden my van will start "jerking"/"bucking", and the rpms always go down. Doesn't do it all the time. Have taken it to the dealer 3 times but they can't get a code to come up. The service guy drove it today and had it happen twice, but nothing came up on the scanner. He said he thought it might be a transmission problem. I have already taken it to a transmission shop, but they didn't get a code either. I am at my wits end trying to get this fixed. Today I called a dealer in a small town about 50 miles from us and talked to their technician. He said he has seen this problem before, and has usually found it to be the fuel pump, and he said that a code doesn't usually come up. I think I may take it over to him to check out. I guess it wouldn't hurt. Good Luck.

Well, problem solved! After 3 days of my van being at the dealers and over $600 they found the problem. When the remote starter was installed, the wires were wrapped around the spark plug wires causing electromagnet interference through the engine wiring harness causing high voltage to the sensors that caused the computer to go into fuel shut off mode. In other words, the idiots that installed my remote starter are to blame. So I'll be looking to them for compensation. Thanx to all who tried to help.

Re: 1998 Olds Silhouette 3.4 Bogging out
Well I have a similar thing going on with my 1998 Olds Silhouette with a 3.4L.
When I am driving say going around 55mph and the van is under a load say like going up a hill, if I keep the gas pedal constant the van will start bucking/almost like missing. Now I can give it more gas and/or get it to shift down and the problem goes away. I notice it really bad when hauling a trailer and doing the constant gas pedal thing. I just had the transmission rebuilt so I know it is not that and the O2 sensor was replaced and there is no remote starter. Any help with this problem is really needed. Ps. No codes show up either

Re: 1998 Olds Silhouette 3.4 Bogging out
the plugs and wires will cause a buck/jerk and won't set a code off if it does not cause a missfire. even though to an exstint it is a missfire.also a weak fuelpump will cause a buck/jerk/hesitation.if it starts to backfire when it bucks then it will be the fuelpump. if you put plugs and plug wires on you can get to the rear plugs and wires by going up by the exhaust pipe after you get it on some ramps. it beats trying to roll the motor forward.
